Rear frame horn cover and more !!!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Driving my 32 Cabriolet today. Lovely sunny day. What's so special about this photo? Ok it's a right hand drive car and has a dickie seat (rumble in the USA).....attached to the rear bumper is a bracket with a rubber pad on allowing one to mount the dickie seat. Furthermore I am informed that I have "VERY RARE REAR FRAME HORN COVERS"....

Am I going nuts or is The Barn a home for 32 nutcases ?

That definitely is a rare left side step pad bracket.First i have seen.I think horn covers are the same as the USA ones.I agree that '32 guys have their own drum beat.

Keith pointed out to me with a pic the difference in the left horn cover.

Sheldon....I firmly believe that Keith needs URGENT PSYCHIATRIC HELP......he has however kept me entertained for a couple of days and thus reducing the pain of lockdown !

A prescription for that super rare '32 part might be the answer!

I offered to make him a perfect facsimile but he wouldn't have it ! At least he now knows the difference between cast iron and forged steel !

David,

Be fair, anyone looking at the reproduction LHD step pad brackets might easily assume that they were originally castings rather than forgings.

Sheldon,

The frame horn cover that David has is quite rare on this side of the pond, but less so over there given the number that Keith has. It is one of three original variations, two of which are rare here, but perhaps not all that rare elsewhere. Methinks that David is exercising his unique sense of humor. More power to him.

David....in these uncertain times I will do my best to keep smiling. Unfortunately for Keith it may be at his expense ! I have decided to re-name him...."DEUCE OCD"

Doubtless he will call me this morning to enlighten me on another 32 miracle !

Take care BARNERS; sane or insane !

These are the type of covers fitted to yours David...

These being the other types that I am aware of. The bottom one with the 'swoopy' indent is rare in the UK, the one at the top being the norm and most common...

Re: Rear frame horn cover and more !!!!!

Keith,

Thanks for the photos.

In all three of your examples, they appear to be of somewhat early production in that there are only round holes where the covers attach to the rear fenders. Later versions, at least those on this side of the pond, have slotted holes to allow for some variation in their fit to the fenders.

Re: Rear frame horn cover and more !!!!!

I notice that 2 of the 3 examples have the 3rd hole for the tail light wire. So the bottom one in second pic is UK or RHD only? The pics of the top pair LHD only?

Correction - four types, there are two variants of the one with the 'normal' lower indent albeit one more pronounced than the other. Note the top detail differences (hard to photograph being shiny black, better seen in the far right image).

David (R) - the majority of mine have the later slots btw. I always guessed that the type with the bumper iron end pressing like David M's and my first pics may have been early production and that Ford later changed to a more practical pressing for ease of bumper iron fitment.

Sheldon, most of the UK ones had a hole in each as we had to have two tail lights when new. Keith

Sheldon,

Those with no wire hole on the right side obviously came from LHD cars, but the presence of the hole on the right side could also mean that it came from a LHD car with two tail lamps. A second tail lamp was a dealer-installed option for non-rumble seat equipped cars in North America and presumably also outside of North America. Likely some jurisdictions required two lamps just as some jurisdictions specified what type of lenses were required in the tail lamps.

The other David (tiger.1000), Keith, and I have been having a lively exchange of e-mails over whether or not there was a Ford-authorized method to permit a second tail lamp on a '32 with a rumble seat retaining the step pad bracket behind the tail lamp bracket. I am inclined to believe that there was as it would be difficult to explain away the second version of the step pad bracket with the forward hole slotted and a different profile along the lower edge of the bracket. Admittedly the method does require trimming the upper edge of the flange on the tail lamp bracket, which avoided having to design two additional tail lamp brackets (one for LHD and one for RHD). As always, my inclination could be erroneous.

Re: Rear frame horn cover and more !!!!!

Now I'm going to have to shuffle through my pile of frame horn covers. Hopefully I have one of each!

Isn't the single rubber bumper hole on the top an indicator of "earliness"? Later production had two rubber bumpers.
