40 turn signal options??

I’d like to add some type of signals, I’d like others to not hit me when I’m driving.

What are my options? I have 4 sets in a box that I have no idea what is what yet.

I could use any of these, or buy a set complete/new.

What do my ford barn experts think?

Re: 40 turn signal options??

IMHO, unless you you've tested these units and have their wiring schematics, it's probably easier just to buy a new one complete with instructions.

Re: 40 turn signal options??

The issue with many of the older units is with the rear lights. Seven wire systems were designed to allow the rear factory housings (with dual filament sockets and bulbs) to provide turn/brake/tail lights. Lesser set ups (those with 4 to 6 wires) need either additional light set housings on the rear or the installation of several relays to support all those same functions. Finding a schematic is a Google search. With the schematic, testing isn't a big deal.

Sometimes "old is not gold". Use a new kit with up to date and improved technology, like LEDs.

For about $20-30(on e-Bay) you can buy the Signal Stat 900 type switch. It comes with a complete wire diagram and you can use your existing parking lights and brake lamps. I have one on my '40 and it works good. If you don't want the column type switch you can buy a toggle type switch to hide under the dash from American Auto Wire or Kwik-Wire.

TJ that looks to be 12v. I still have the original 6v POS ground

Light bulbs come in both 6 volt and 12 volt versions, and they don't care about polarity.

Re: 40 turn signal options??

Not all of the new 12v units can be converted to 6v. You are wise to check before buying.

Just curious, but why can't the switch be used on 6 or 12 volts. The one I bought had as 12 volt bulb for the indicator light and all I had to do was install a 6 volt bulb. The wiring is the same on 6 or 12.

As I mentioned I put the switch in my '40 coupe and it is still 6 volt and positive ground. I used the same switch on my '48 coupe(in my avatar) and it is 12 volt negative ground. You only need to change the indicator bulb to correspond to your voltage.

Re: 40 turn signal options??

The 12v LED units are not voltage flexible and are +/- sensitive.

I don't think that's what he's showing in his original posts.

He isn't. A number of posts referred to or recommended various other units - including several that are clearly 12v. Hence my word of caution.

Re: 40 turn signal options??

I think the confusion came in on the LED part. LEDs will be voltage specific, where the one tj was referencing is not LED so changing the bulb works

I got the Sears Allstate like in your last pic., yard sale 10 bucks. It was new in box with instructions for postwar Ford. Works fantastic, built it into my V8 jalopy and cancel works and adjust easy. Any big truck is using easy to fit and hook up switch, but the Allstate seems period correct. I have several old timers and prefer to resurrect as opposed to using cheap modern stuff made on other side of planet.

Forget turn signals on your 40. The kid behind you on his cell phone will never see them same as your brake lights . Just continue to use your arm

Any chance you still have the wiring instructions?

Some LEDs do.
