34 pickup oil question and ignition resistor

I have a 34 pickup with a 21 stud engine that I think is original to the truck although it has a factory rebuilt tag on it. When I got the truck, it didn't have a dipstick in the oil pan. I'm getting ready to try to run it (have done a ton of body work, etc) and so I found a dipstick, put 5 quarts of oil in the engine after removing and cleaning the oil pan and marked the 5 qt level on the new dipstick. Now I'm worried that 5 quarts is not the right amount. Is it?

Also, the dash was apart when I got it. Assuming everything to be stock, should there be a resistor in the ignition wiring? If so, what size and where can I get one?

Thank you all for your help. It's nice to be a part of this socially distanced community.

5 quarts is indeed right . Also note the fill amount for the u-joint .

The resistor question depends on the coil you have. If it is the original style coil that is mounted to the top of the distributor then it needs the resistor under the dash. If you need one your best bet is to try and locate an original one, the repo units are mostly junk! If it has a remote located can style coil it most likely does not need a resistor (depends of the resistance of the coil).

The original resistor should be on a panel along with the fuse. If the panel is missing one would guess the wiring has been changed. And while were at it, is it still 6v positive ground? If not, that changes everything.

Update, I was thinking 36 when I posted the diagram. A 34 should still have the floor starter and the main wiring connection from there.

If it is the original 34 wiring, then this. Basically the same except the main power comes from the floor starter switch.

This is NOS 34 and should be mounted inside the firewall left of the hand throttle rod .

Pic above of a 36 looks to be the same ?

Thanks David. I noted the u-joint info also. Say what?? Never heard of that stuff. What is it? Can it be purchased? Can we use regular moly grease?

Thank you thank you all. The wiring diagrams and pics of the resistor board are most helpful. There is a board like that in a box of parts, but it is broken. I can deal with that. Can you tell me what the resistance of the resistor is supposed to be so I can check mine to make sure it is ok. I have the orig distributor and coil.

You might consider replacing the coil with an updated one from "Skip" Haney. They are discussed many times on this board, and are considered essential to having a solid, reliable ignition system on these engines. The original Ford coils are over 70 years old and have deteriorated over the years.

The actual formula is in one of the 32 service bulleting ?
Pretty sure that is where it was .

Basically steam cyl oil ] GL1 ] with thickeners .
The big difference with this grease is the TALLOW used as a thickener .
Your fingers will melt it .

The old waterpump grease melted at the touch also .

Dropping point under 100 .
Cornhead grease dropping point is 450 .

I just use SAE 140 .

The pictured part is mine .
Took it out of the nos spares drawer .
Don't recall where-when I got it .
Been awhile though .
Have some just resistors also but can't find them now .

Real interested in the one you are talking about ?
Pics ?
