34 phaetons in travelog Was wathing TCM today and they had a travelog of MI sites from back in the 30s or 40s. One feature shown had 34 phaetons made into dune buggys, three or four of them, doors and fenders off with high floatation tires running over sand dunes.
Any Michiganders around that know about this? |
Re: 34 phaetons in travelog That is just plain sick. Wish I had seen it.

Re: 34 phaetons in travelog They were probably the dune vehicles used for giving tourists a ride out onto the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes in NW lower Michigan. By the late 50's they used big GM convertibles. Too bad they stopped these excursions. Probably not environmentally correct these days.

Re: 34 phaetons in travelog old thread I know...
They were called Dune Scooters, Mac Woods dune rides had them. Google image search on Dune Scooter and see what comes up. They are still in business in Michigan. Mears area Silver Lake Sand Dunes. If you go there, they still have one in a garage in the back that is opened to the public. Scary lookin ride! There are foot pegs outside the body for the outer passenger. Many photos show them 3 or 4 seated across. |
