Normal Clutch Chatter
 

Getting ready to tear down my clutch to investigate the source of some moderate chatter. Previous owner put in all new parts and there is a float-a-motor mount on the trans. Just do not know what would be considered normal clutch performance. In general, do Model A clutches tend to have some chatter, or are they typically silky smooth ? Welcome input. Thanks.

BTW - Just seen "Ford v Ferrari" ----- awesome !!

Mine is by no means silky smooth.

There should be no clutch chatter. I would consider a very little amount acceptable but ideally it would be fixed. My clutch chattered until I adjusted the pressure plate fingers.


Have you checked the tightness of the float-a-motors? I seem to remember that too tight could cause issues.

Also it is a good idea to have the flywheel surfaced.

I think that before tearing things apart you should drive out to a quiet location and see how good you can take off. Do it multiple times and see if the clutch doesn't improve with a bit of use. If not, open it up, but do check for obvious reasons as listed above first . Good luck.

Can take off at idle and people think it's automatic, no sensation of anything happening, but car is moving

Put a used disc and pressure plate back in 30+ years ago

I have a new pressure plate that I adjusted as per service bulliten ,a new disc and resurfaced flywheel.1500 miles and has a always been smooth.I have original motor mounts,(30 Tudor).

Mine was chattering, when I took it apart I found it mostly was the transmission. The main drive gear and main shaft had a bad roller bearing and shaft causing the chatter.

There are a number of causes of clutch chatter. I would venture a conversation with the previous owner about why the clutch was replaced, may lead to some answers. If the clutch was replaced to eliminate chatter and all parts were replaced, I venture that leaves the flywheel surface as a possible suspect. Over time, for some who do not understand not slipping the clutch, there is a tendancy over time that both the pressure plate and flywheel surface can get blued form heat and warp a bit. Normally a little is ok, but when it gets real noticeable it is just aggravating. If and when you get to the point of replacing clutch parts again, pay attention to look for oil, bluing or warping of the pressure plate or Flywheel clutch surface. It would really be great if you could talk to the previous owner about why the clutch was replaced. And if it was replaced due to wear allowing slipping and was left that way as long as the car was drivable, I suspect the flywheel is needing resurfacing.
