More questions for you guys...

As noted in other posts I'm preparing to fire my recently rebuilt '52 8BA for the first time. The Holley 94 I plan to use was also fully rebuilt. How should I adjust the carb for this first run?

The objective is to get it to start quickly.

I always adjust the idle mixture screws out 3-1/2 turns initially, and pour a bit of fuel down the carb......work the throttle manually........engine should fire up immediately if the distributor is correct. You can adjust everything after you are convinced the engine is operating properly.....no leaks, no strange noises, etc. Keep a fire extinguisher and a fire proof blanket at the ready......

Carl, With gas in the bowl, look down the throat and pump the throttle one time. You'll see two squirts of gas if the carb has been rebuilt correctly, after which the engine should start immediately. It may not continue to run, however, unless the two idle screws are adjusted to about 1/2 turn out. Fine tuning may commence at this point, while engine is running, but best tuning should be when engine is at running temperature.

Mixture screws 1-1/2 turns out from (gently) snugged home.

Other than that nothing.

If you want a quick fire up put a little gas straight down the carb and be prepared to move the throttle to hit the sweet spot and have a screwdriver ready to adjust the idle, but note you shouldn't let it idle for the first 20 minutes or so if a new start on a fresh build.

So the initial adjustment should be for a fast idle.

Keep adding gas until it pulls fuel through for itself.

Then adjust the idle and mixture once warmed up but no slow idle as stated above.

The reason for no slow idle is because a lot of lubrication depends on the oil being thrown off the crank and rods.

I don't think a squirt of starting fluid would be a bad.

I have one of those "squeeze" ketchup containers you see in restaurants with good, no alcohol gas in it. Since the Holley has a float vent, you can fill the float bowl directly through the vent until it's full. It takes some getting used to, but pretty soon you will figure out how much to put in the bowl. This way, you don't have to dump gas down the carb, and it should start quickly. Just a little less crude than dumping gas directly into the manifold. (You can use it for that too, and it's a little more controllable than maneuvering a gas can.) I've had my "primer/squeezer" for about 5 years now, and the gas doesn't seem to affect the plastic at all.

I agree with the 1 1/2 turns out on the idle mixture screws. Don't understand the 3 1/2 and 1/2 turn out recommendations. That would only be if there is something wrong with the carb where it's running too rich or too lean at idle. Everyone I've rebuilt usually ends up being 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out.

I think the mention of 3 1/2 turns means 3 times 1/2 a turn which equals 1-1/2 turns. (One and a half turns).

That would make sense. I'm used to calling one turn as 360 degrees.
