1928 Ford Frame with solid front crossmember
 

Driver, fun project NOT a SHOW CAR Question: Just picked up a nice 1928 chassis with forged running board brackets and the solid engine mount front cross member. Plan is to build a running chassis with my grandson, all original A parts but not year correct to one another. Is there a problem using the stock early motor mount, or should it be swapped out for the more common later style? thanks. Bob

Like everything else, a lot of these decisions are based on personal preference. I have a 1928 Fordor that retains the solid front mount and I think it is fine. It smooths out at the sweet RPM spot just like the cars with the spring loaded yoke. If you aren't concerned with authenticity the Ford Service Bulletins show how to modify the solid crossmember to work with the later flexible front mount. In my experience many many 1928 cars got that modification at some point in their service. I think it is generally accepted that the design was changed to reduce vibration, and it does for much of the operating RPM range.

I'm glad no one ever cut my original solid 28 front mount.
Can't say it vibrates any more than my 29 or any other spring mount I've been in.

Just hosed off the leaves and pine needles, looks like a nice chassis, old restoration that most likely gave up its body to a Hot Rod build. Not a big deal to me, were else are the original parts going to come from? Nice clear frame number, but a lot of space from the last number to the last star, I'll start another thread on that. This will be a nice grandfather grandson project. Bob

I've driven my 28 Phaeton with the solid cross member all over the country and never felt there was a vibration issue. I think it might have been a production change to speed up the installation and they said it was for vibration issues.
