Removing the Quail?
 

Trying to test my radiator cap. How does it fasten to the radiator. Is the
"thermometer" removable from the ornament?

It should unthread from the bottom side of the rad cap. They are removable but I'm not sure how eay they are removed as I've never done it. You can see the replacement part at Macs Auto Parts under part number 28-22109-1 or A18385TQ to get an idea of how they are attached to the cap.

Thanks, the picture from Macs was helpful. I just need to put a locking pliers on the bottom below the threads. How does the entire cap come off the radiator?
Do you know what temp range the "thermometer" should react to? 212?

If you have a look at the rear of the Quail, where it screws onto the radiator, you will find a small allen screw. This locks the Quail onto the radiator. Undo the allen screw and the Quail should just unscrew. Do check that the thread on the rad is not too danaged.

Best to keep replying to a recent post to keep it all in one post, not only for yourself, but for others to not have to repeat the same yesterday's answers, and for others down the track who do a search for the same problem.

Re your new question on reaction for 212 F, that is a pig in a poke if it is a repo quail.

Chinese made so quality is so-so .

I have two and out of the box, they hardly read red at all .

After a bit of use, you will find the red separates, and air gaps appear in between .

A bit unsightly, but on both of mine, the air gaps have now gone to the bottom out of sight under the red, and now the red pushes up to a very good height, almost as you should expect, it runs mid way normal and near the top when getting hot.

Oil filter wrench strap type with a rag works great if it hasen,t been removed for some time

Make sure you did what Tony mentioned above. Otherwise you mess up your treads on the radiator (if it is a 1928/29)

Thanks everybody! Removed thermo from quail, immersed in boiling water with no reaction. Ordered a new one from Sacramento Ford.

One tip.

It is a natural reaction to grab around the back of the quail when undoing.

The thermometers snap very easily.

Change the grab to just the beak and top wings without touching the thermometer at all.

Mine broke and I am sure that is what did it without knowing.
