Top Prop Lock Washer
 

noticed a post the other day re: lost top prop nut(s) ... since mine are NOS and i do plan to drive some, i dont want to loose them. i assume the double lock washer the vendors sell probaby are not 'original' but would probably be helpful when not showing. how are these installed? are the 'tabs' bent after installation, etc... pix of installed item would be helpful thanks

Charles, that was me that lost an original top prop nut. After that, I installed the washers. Here is a close-up. No idea, if I installed them correctly, but I haven't lost another. A question for you. Is your passenger side Top Prop Nut and bolt left-hand thread?
If so, I would trade my first-born for it. He's only 43, so about have the age of your NOS top prop nut. I cannot see how you could pass on such a offer.

thanx for speedy response and pix ... checked my 4 nuts/bolts, all are right hand thread. as for swap, will pass, my 2 x 30 somethings were enough

Interesting. My vehicle and top irons are Canadian.
Wonder if the left-hand thread on passenger side is a Canadian oddity?

Steve., the pictures are right there under the post as big as daylight.. This seems like a computer at YOUR end problem., EMPTY your CACHE and then Shut down and re boot.. This is NOT a site problem here at all

Thanks for the info, Marco. As soon as I read your post, I went out to double check the driver's side Top Prop Nut and Bolt on my Roadster. It is definately right-hand thread, as opposed to the left-hand thread bolt on the passenger side.
Not sure of what to make of it, but if anyone going to French Lick has a left-hand set they cannot use, please let me know if I have to bring my second-born, too. :confused:

Once the top prop knobs are on who will know Left or right thread [other then you[ I'll not lose any sleep over it for sure !].And with the special lock washer on who's going to take them off to check once they are bent over... :>)

Because I still have the original left-hand thread bolt that goes to the nut Prop I lost and it sure looks a hell of lot better than the ugly repro.
Not too fond of those "special" washers, either. :mad:

I had the special "washer's redone by a friend of mine with a orginial one from Bill Sturm who took it off a unrestored roadster. It is smaller then the repro's made today and fit better.. Look for a pair of orginial ones with right hand thread. I was very lucky when i found a pair of n.o.s. knobs for my 180A. Same as the Cabriolet's. Your knobs are the same as Standard open cars but chrome plated .Have you been looking for them in black.I tried to have them made but the die's got to be $$$$ ..I know the crimping around the back edge sucks ! I had asked about that and was told that would of been 1 more die to be made.So close but yet so far away..:mad:

I really don't care if the Prop Nuts are right or left-hand thread, I just want them to be the nicer looking originals that match.
I have few repro parts on my Roadster and I am trying to keep it that way.
Right now the Prop Nuts are not matching, and yes, I AM losing sleep over it.
Last night I was awake, thinking how many hours I drove, back tracking the bumpy roads where I think I lost the original Prop Nut, looking for a little shiny reflection to no avail.
I know, I'm sick. :o

BTW, if anyone traveling HWY 100 in Vermont that finds an original 1931 Model A hubcap, please return it. :o

Hello Thank you for the post or threads whatever they are called as i needed to see how the top prop washer are installed with that after market washer, thanks oh by the way i finally after 50 years got my dream car the 1930 model a deluxe roadster :) God Bless

I have a '31 Cabriolet and was never sure how to properly install those lock washers. They just didn't make any sense to me how they would lock the nut---when the tab is folded unto the nut both the washer and nut just spin as a unit until they both fall off!! :confused:


My solution, omitted the washer and used a lock washer. :rolleyes:
