drag link orientation

I'm replacing a tie rod end on the drag link. I found the attached exploded view of the front end and discovered my drag link is installed with the solid end connected to the pitman arm instead of the right wheel. Does this have any effect on the steering, etc? I can't see how it would, but want to make sure.

Re: drag link orientation

40cpe is this for a 1940 Ford car? The diagram you posted is later and shows the (1941) 11Y- style of drag link that replaced the drag link used in 1940 production. If you look at earlier diagrams they will show the (1936) 68- style drag link used in production in 1940. That 68- style drag link has the adjustable tie rod end at the steering arm. So I would connect the drag link, depending upon what drag link my car had, as the parts diagram shows.

My car is a '38, the diagram is labeled "1938-1939 Ford Passenger, ---". Because of weather, it will be a while before I can drive and test it. I just wondered if it makes a practical difference.

40cpe: I doubt if it matters.

I know if you have a 8BA with a truck oil pan in a 40 ford, i put the adjuster at the spindle . I have seen a number of early fords with 8BA motors with big gouges in the oli pan from the adjuster hitting it. With the adjuster at the spindle just make sure the bolts dont interfere with the tierod

This is the stock configuration on my 40 Ford using an 8BA with 49-51 Merc oil pan. Posie 2040 reversed eye spring. Magnum 4 in. dropped axle and steering arms. 5:60x15 15 in wheels. Double nuts on perch bolt so I can place a bottle jack there without damaging threads. Red line marks center of axle.

I DO have an 8BA with a truck oil pan, and I had to bend the pitman arm to get clearance on the pan. This car came to me with a SBC in it and the adjustment on the spindle end. If no adverse effects are brought up quickly, I'll put it back like it is for clearance on the pan. Thanks for the comments.
