Generator wiring
 

I had a bad pulley bearing in my generator and while apart found the field coils looking terrible and decided to replace a few parts. New parts arrived today. The one wire off the field coils has the connector for attaching to the brush. The other end is a pigtail with no connector. I cant for the life of me remember where that end attaches to. For reference I am referring to #1 in the attached photo

I would think, the wire with the terminal should connect to the movable brush. The wire without a terminal should connect to the ground brush. Some rebuilders drill and tap a hole in the case near where the wire comes out of the field coil and connect it to the ground screw. This makes it a bit easier to install the brush end plate on the case.

The field coils connect to the 3rd brush on one end and to ground on the other. Many of the cylinder type generators have a screw through the case that the one end grounds to. The earlier types that don't have the screw, ground to the case where the output terminal goes through the case if I remember correctly but they have to be insulated by the terminal carry though insulator. A person can drill the case, give it a countersink and install a ground terminal if needed. The one main brush that grounds is grounded to the rear brush/bearing support plate.
