52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod
when I bought this car, the mechanical fuel pump and push rod was replaced with an elec. pump. My question is ; how do I install a new push rod so I can put the mechanical pump back on car in line w/elec pump ? Can I just insert it down through the top , assuming there is a bushing in place. Does it thread on to something at the cam or just ride there ? How do I know that it is all the way down? Thanks for any and all help. Bob Rinker |
Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod It just drops into place. Once it's in and before you install the fuel pump, have some one kit the key and turn the engine a revolution or two and watch the rod; it should go up and down. If you want to measure it, I think it should move .22".
I have found it's easier to bolt the fuel pump to the stand and install that assembly as a unit rather than bolting on the stand and then installing the pump. |
Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod There are two different legths so be careful as length will depend on intake mtg surface height and fuel pump stand configuration/height. Suggest you also check first to make sure there are no mods made to the inside of the block where the rod is supposed to go.

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod There is only one length of pushrod for the 8BA.

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod Yes, assuming everything is stock.

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod There is the possibility the pump was replaced because of a worn fuel pump lobe on the cam.

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod I'm finding 2 different pictures of the push rod 1 has a groove around the one end and the other pic shows a lip around this end. which is correct and which way does it go in.
Thanks Bob Rinker |
Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod Just confirmed with Mac's Parts,N.Y. (now Eckler's Parts) that the fuel pump push rod with the ridge(lip) like a top hat was incorrectly sent to them by a supplier and then sent to me. They have been pulled from the shelves and will be replaced with the correct push rod ( with a groove in one end). This still leaves one question, does the end with groove go toward cam or go up toward the fuel pump arm?
Again Thanks, Bob Rinker |
Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod 1 Attachment(s)
The 8BA push rod is 3-piece, and the longer end goes into the block.

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod Interesting. I have two rods I purchased from Speedway that look like the one one the left, only one us an inch shorter. What is the purpose of the cup/hat?

Re: 52 Ford flathead fuel pump push rod I thought that when you removed the rod you were supposed to add a drift plug so that you didn't bleed oil pressure? If that is so, that plug would have to be removed.
