1936 spare tire cover rubber seal replacement?

The face plate has a small bead shaped rubber seal. It appears that this was installed after the part was painted. What is the best way to remove/replace this.

Some years ago we made a spare wheel cover for my 32 Cabriolet. I suspect the process is the same. On the assumption that you are restoring or repainting the seal
just pull it off and with a suitable solvent remove any traces of old rubber and glue.

Yes; I fitted the new "U" section rubber after it was painted. Important to find a glue with doesn't dissolve paint.

I just did this, used a dentist type pick tool to dig out all the old seal.
It had gotten really dry and hard. I got a set of picks at Harbor Freight.

Where did you get the seal?

The seal was "over-rider bead"which I believe came from Paul Beck Vintage Supplies
here in the UK.....you'll find all their products by GOOGLING Paul Beck. I feel sure however that you'll find a suitable product in the US and of course there's no guarantee that the seal on a 32 is the same as a 36 ?

Ray..........I got mine from C&G Ford parts in Southern California, they sell the one from Dennis Carpenter, $10 bucks. Bob Drake also sells them.

I'll have to check to see if its the same for a 37 panel spare tire cover. Thanks to all for the info.

If your not a points car, I used Trimlock around the disk. It's thicker and protects both sides of the disk and prevents scratching of the disk and/or outer ring.

Here is the distributor: http://stores.ebay.com/R-and-P-Carri...&_sid=13922267

I have about 20 feet of each, black and white. If you want it you can have it for $1/ ft plus postage. You'll need 8 feet to go around the disk.
