Multi-Disc Clutch Pack...

After assembly of the Multi-Disc Clutch Pack, I have about 1/4 inch movement up and down of the clutch discs within the assembled pack.

Is that normal? First time with this.

Thanks.

It may be normal - Victor Page in his semnal "How to Repair the Model A" shows an "alignment device" to which the disks are stacked - and which hold them in alignment for insertion in the flywheel.

Here is the KRW tool showing the "fingers."

The usual wear pattern on these is the teeth wear "grooves" in the grooves, i.e. making the groove "deeper" where the contact is. Also the teeth wear "shorter", I've seen them almost down to 'nubs'. Both would give you the defect you mention.

I don't think the defect is fatal - but re-arranging plates in the stack - and comparing plates may give you some sense of the magnitude of the defect.
