Lost One Emergency Brake
 

The passenger side Emergency Brake is not working. I removed the drum and found the drum had worn the head off the center toggle lever pin where the connecting lever connects to the two toggle links.

Everything was brand new, including the brake drums 2100 miles ago. I never heard any noise. The drum does not rub on the backing plate. There is very little distortion on the stud plates inside the drum.

My question is: Is it possible the drum just had to wear a little? I'm replacing the pin and don't know what else to do. I can buy axle shims but the drum doesn't hit the backing plate but it sure hit the center toggle pin head. Not a fan of axle shims.

Concur with post #2. Pin is inserted with the head outside. Cotter pin inside.

Look at your studs in the drum and make sure they are flat against the inside of the hub that is where they rub. or you might need to shim the hub out. that is real common.

is it just me or does the C moon shape piece look like it bends too far out? im not super familiar with standard A brakes (AA brakes are close but different)

I was thinking the same thing.


Is there any welding in the studs area?

Looks bent to me at the actuating arm shaft just above the axle.

Is there a correct way to put on the emergency band or does it not matter what side is "in"? I am thinking they can go on either way as long as you can see the pin heads from the outside. Was the C shaped piece in between the 2 connecting arms?

No welding on studs. All new drums and parts...ALL New every piece. The arm had been connected in between the toggles as directed in the manuals with the toggles installed correctly creating a slot for the arm.


Can I install an axle shim to hold the drum out slightly...is that the cure?

#10 There is an inner and outer facing to an E Band. The two triangular tabs need to rest flush on the carrier along with the two tabs that have the holes for the pins. If the band is flipped over, the band will not sit flush and will be on an angle on the carrier. You would have a difficult time getting the drum on.

There seems to be a lot of wear on the C link which would indicate either the drum is on too far on the axle (would need to shim) and / or the studs are protruding out from the hub or are welded.

Here is how everything should look. I can't see everything in your picture, so I can't tell why the link and pin was rubbing.

Compare the picture in #5 to mine in #14.
Why does the #5 appear to have a shoulder on the axle right where it leaves the axle tube?

Tom, I looked at the observed "shoulder area" in an enlargement and it appears to be grease.

I agree with your earlier comment, the connection of the link to the actuating arm appears bent. The link is out further than it should be and causing it to rub.

It's a 29. I'll look at the arm and if the axle has a shoulder or grease...or what. I'll get another picture or two. I'll mark the new pin with some paint and spin the drum and remove it and see if the paint is marked. We'll see.

sounds like a plan - if the studs were hitting it the stud heads should have score lines. Might have to push and pull on the drum as you rotate it to simulate the real world forces.

The cotter pin didnt fall out or the pin itself too long to where it could have worked its way out to get hit by the studs did it?
