screwed up my wiring

I put a new harness in the car and just noticed that my taillight is always on. Whether the switch is on or not. If I rotate the headlight switch the license plate light goes on or off the way is should. What did I do?

You sure it's not the stop light that's on?

It's got to be the stop light. You mention that the license plate light goes on and off per the switch. That bulb is the tail light (the upper of the two bulbs) so the tail light IS working. Is the stop light switch bound up?

Crap! the stoplight switch moves freely. Something must be grounding it out. That said, does the stoplight work even when the car is switched off?

Yep, the stop light should work even when the ignition is off. You should have a test light or voltage meter to see if there's voltage at the terminal to the lights even when the pedal is up. Or, an Ohm meter so you could disconnect one of the switch wires and check for continuity through the switch pedal up and pedal down.
Also, is the spring between the pedal and switch going slack when the pedal is up?
