1932 Ford Grill Shell Welting

Did the 32`grill shell have a welting that went around the outer edge of the shell for the hood to set on? If so, where can it be purchased? Thanks.

Yes. It is called hood lacing. Can be purchased at most of the Early Ford Suppliers. Comes as a set usually...radiator shell and cowl.

As Pat noted, it is widely available. Unfortunately, the hard core lacing that Ford used originally is no longer available; what is sold today has a soft core. As a result, over time it compresses under the pressure of the hood latches and eventually the hood side moldings will no longer align properly with the cowl molding. The misalignment shows up most noticeably in the pin striping.

One thing I found in my search for it was: forget Drake. NO RIVETS included in their kit to attach the end clips. Found some hollow tube rivets on E*** and a star shaped setting tool from Tandy. C&G may include the rivets in their kits. Without 'em, you're screwed.

Lacing sag.
Have noticed that with replacement stuff bought ages ago.
What do you think about removing the sagging lacing and putting something (??) under it to restore the height and then reinstalling?
There is a limit to how much that new stuff will sag.

That should work.

Bubsy, there is a slight "channel" that the welting fits over. I cut 3/8" strips of 1/16" rubber, about 8" long and placed them under the welting to shim it up. Also, when you do the installation, at the bottom of the radiator shell there are three vertical slots that accept the lower welting attaching clip. Size the welting to the top slot. This allows you to tighten it as it stretches. If you don't have you car "fine point judged", let me offer another tip. I used 3/4" shrink tubing at the ends of the welt. It really cleans up the raw edge of the welting and prevents fraying of the material.

I have that original type of welting that has since been discontinued. I may not be using it. If thats the case, I'll post it for sale in the swap section.
