Transmission Leaking
 

Need to pull the trans on my 1949 ford coupe. Is there an access door in the front floor trans. hump area. Carpets are glued down and don't want to rip them up for no reason. I know the trucks had a trans. door but not sure about the cars.

Yes, there is a cover over the transmission. You have to take the carpet out and remove some bolts and the cover comes off. Makes it easier to work on.

Are you sure? The earlier cars had the removable transmission cover, but my '51, like Gene's, doesn't. Just curious. what is the year and model of car are you referring to?

For sure your transmission comes out and in from below. You can get to all of the bolts from there. I have done it on a creeper with the car on jack stands, but a lift and a transmission support jack makes it a lot easier.

The only door is under the driver floor mat, its for the master cylinder for the fluid.

I thought he was talking about the cover on the transmission hump. I have the one on my 49 off now while i am working on it.

I can take a picture with my phone, but not able to post it. Anyone i can Email it to. Might take a while as i have to push it out of the garage to get a good picture.

My 50 Ford car has a cover over the trans. Need to lift the carpet. If you lift the carpet slow by working a scraper between the carpet and floor it can be done. Be careful and you my not damage the carpet. Than you can glue it down again. You may have some type of pad under the carpet that you may have to deal with.

Carpet? Glued down? Every shoebox I have ever seen has a rubber floor mat in front. Is yours perhaps a Crestliner? How would you check the brake fluid if it were glued down?

If you have a non overdrive it is easily done from below. I've done an overdrive on a convertible on which has the X member. Not easy. I made a fixture to hold it to the jack. I believe with the cross member out you can just slide it back then drop it.

I am also "technology challenged". Verizon sends me weekly emails trying to get me to upgrade to a "Smart Phone", but I'm having none of it. The can have my "Flip Fone" when they "pry it from my cold, dead hands".:D

To the O/P. I just received a picture of the transmission access opening in "38coop"'s car. It sure looks factory to me. I guess you'll have to lift your carpet and see what you have. That being said, I don't think the transmission could come out that way; the opening is just too small, especially with an O/D transmission. Please keep us informed of how this works out for you.
