Got the call

I got a call from Mitchell yesterday letting me know my overdrive is finished and shipping. I am looking forward to getting it in soon. My first question is, Will it be Ok to leave my rear tires on and remove the rear end with spring attached? I have never removed a banjo so this will be a first. I have a two post lift. I take it both halves of clamshell need to come off? Any pointers?

Have removed and installed tranny's using only bumper jacks and jack stands (to lift and hold body) just high enough to roll the whole rear assy. on wheels far enough back to give access to tranny removal.
Of course all attachments to tranny have to be disconnected.

Tommy, When I pulled the rear from my '40 Conv. a few years ago...I made two round wooden wheels out of OSB. It gave more clearance to slide the rear out without scratching anything. Good luck, Pat

You need Jack stands and a floor jack to remove the rear end. That how I do it. Just slide the rear end back enough to remove the driveshaft.

Ken, I should have stated that I removed the rear from my/your '40 Conv. while it was on my 4-post lift. Fun!

Yes you can leave the tires on, just get it high enough to roll it out. Then remove the torque tube and drive shaft and replace with the Mitchell. You will love it.

Just a word of Caution. Be sure that when you remove the Heavy read end assembly thatb= you have enough support for the front rest of the car as on a 2 post lift it could fall down in front with a plan or support for what will be the HEAVY front end of car! Just a word of caution... Good luck. kx

Thanks Kerk.. I will be sure to lift the car with the rear heavy and keep an eye on it. I am excited to get this done. Up to this point I have not been comfortable taking my car over 20-30 miles from home just because I can`t maintain highway speeds without worry of hurting it due to RPMs.
I appreciate all the helpful comments... I have no help so it is going to be just me.

That's what I did when I installed mine. Take the tires off. What shift did you get? Cable or lever. Also don't forget clearance once installed. What year is your car? A lever would not work on a 46 so I used the cable which works great. You will love it.

I went with lever. My car has reversed springs so I kind of expect clearance issues. Steve at Mitchell didn`t think so, but we shall see. The reason I ask about the wheels is because a previous owner used the 37 hubcaps on 15" wheels. I don`t think I can get them off without destroying them. I know it is a job I have to look forward to just don`t want to get into that right now.
