converted generator
 

I bought an early v8 3 brush generator converted to 12v. i want to put it in my 36. the generator now has 2 wires coming out of the top hole...one for generator (armature) and the other for field. What is a good voltage regulator to complete this set-up? The seller wasn't very specific about this. Don't think I'll ever need more than 35 amps. Thanks for any help. Terry

Hard to say what´s in there...but if it´s still 3 brush...you have an A-type generator.
So basicly any delco 12v generator regulator should be able to do the job...find one with a low amp rating if the armature is the original or it will burn...
You want to go solid state regulator WV Beetle 67-71 bosch 9 190 040 099 E...The bosch unit isn´t to good looking in solid state...but compact and would bolt in right on top of the generator.

That Bosch number starts with a 0, I think.
Don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but I have sold a bunch of Bosch.

Difficult to know exactly what has been done to this generator to make it a 12 volt unit unless the seller can tell you. To correctly convert it the field coils need to be changed to 12 volt ones and also the armature needs to be rewound with a finer wire than the 6 volt wire. It probably should be changed to a two brush set up if a voltage and current regulator is to be incorporated in the circuit. The field circuit is connected in either the A or B connection with the regulator to match that. I would think you would only get a safe maximum of approx. 25 amps from that smallish generator. 35 Amps is out of the question. Maybe have an auto electrical shop run it up in their test bench and look inside it to establish what it can safely charge at. The current control unit inside the regulator would have to be reset to match the safe continuous maximum amps output to match the generator. Some people don't alter the armature winding from the 6 volt specs and only change the field coils to 12 volts which will reduce the current output by about 30%. This all has to be done fairly correctly so not a good idea to be taking a guess on it. Regards, Kevin.

back in the day when all this stuff was not avalable we just used a 12v regulator on the 6v gen never had trouble

Thanks fellas. Seller did originally say the generator was set up for an A connection. U-tube tells me this means the field wiring is insulated and the circuit is grounded at the voltage reg?? ...by means of bolting it to firewall? I'll have to look into this more before i buy.
