Head bolt washers

On a 1935 with cast iron heads should there be washers under the nuts?

Re: Head bolt washers

In my 1938-41 Chassis Parts List the pictorial shows a washer along with the stud and nut. However, in the pictorial, there is no separate part # given for the washer. Given the choice, I would use a washer. More astute folks will provide best answer.

According to Green book, 21 stud 33-37 uses (351428-S7) washer on Aluminum heads only.

Only when installing aluminum heads were washers incorporated. No need when utilizing iron heads.

1935 and 1936 Chassis parts books show (42) 351428-S-7 washers used on both alum. and cast iron heads. Washers may have been eliminated in later years on cast iron heads.

Re: Head bolt washers

Don, The washer does not appear in the Earliest of 1940 Parts catalogs, however the 1934-38 catalogs list it (I do not have a 1933 or 1939) in the Canadian 1938 catalog it states the washer was used on Models: 40,48,50,51,67,68,77,78,79,81A,81C,81T

This certainly supports assumption they were used on iron heads from 1935-38.

If you decide on using washers (very good idea on either iron or aluminum heads) we have available "special" ones that are barely visible under the nuts or bolt heads!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Here's a shot of them with some OEM bolts, you can see they would almost be "invisible", but they do work!

I have used (military spec) MS20002-7 flat washers in the past.
At the time they were about 10¢ each.

Gary, Do you offer these in stainless & will they work with acorn covers? Thank you. Bill

Hi Bill, those "black" washers in the photo fit under the chrome acorn nut covers we have on the shelf here.

The O.D. on the washers is .675". May be difficult to see clearly but the photo below shows the entire washer sitting inside the chrome nut!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Not sure if ARP has them in stainless in the same size, I doubt it though? Will give them a call later in the day, they're out on the west coast, and report back!

Gary, Thank you. The black will be fine when I get to that point. I was concerned with the covers not hiding the washers.

Would you mind posting the source for those, I'd be interested in a reliable vendor for SS hardware.

Check out a post by Tim Ayers above about source of ARP bolts - Allens fasteners. They list all kinds of stuff.

Getting back to the original question.....Here is the correct washer used in the 1935-36 time frame.

I have never(to the best of my memory) disassembled a 35-36 iron head engine which had flat washers.

Re: Head bolt washers

To answer many of the above posts about the washer availability, the O.P. wanted the washers to fit completely under the acorn nuts, the largest O.D. to fit that number is the size I posted in my original post, .675", anything larger will NOT go!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. ARP doesn't make them in the necessary size in stainless, only the "block-ox" ones. Their smallest O.D. for the stainless 7/16" washers is .812", these will not go with the acorns! They are also 120" thick. The ones we do have here for 7/16" bolts/studs with the correct O.D. (.675") come in either .062" or .120" thick.

The OP wanted to know if washers were used on 1935 cast iron heads.

Hi Jack, he did ask in post #9 about the washers and the nut covers!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Not really sure you'll find any stainless washers the needed size, 7/16" I.D. by .675" O.D. We use our black ones for rod bolt washers! If you search for 7/16" rod bolt washers you may find them in stainless, I just don't know!
