Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

Using a standard size engine hoist with a boom, is it possible to remove an 8BA engine from a 40 Ford car WITHOUT
removing the HOOD, FRONT SHEET METAL or GRILLE?

I've done it by removing only the hood and radiator but, am wondering if it's really necessary.

Anyone done it that way? Thanks, JIM

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

Don't know about an 8ba but I have removed the 40 engine from my wagon after only removing the radiator and leaving the hood on. l left the trans in the car with a jack under it and used 4 line up pins (long bolts with heads cut off and screwdriver slots cut in the ends) when installing the motor. This was to fix a junk new TO bearing that lasted 7 miles. Was pretty easy as I unbolted the exhaust manifolds from the block and left the exhaust system intact.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

a tape measure would tell you. 1st you would need to mount as close as possible to the motor to reduce the height needed, then once free of the tranny you can start going up so you will gain clearance as you go forward. never done it on a 40, just "thinking out loud". i'll bet kube has some thoughts about this

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

why take a chance of damage if you just take the pivot bolts off the hood you do not change the hood fit

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

Is it necessary? Removing the radiator and hood makes life way easy. Like the Duece
said unbolt manifolds and leave it -better than fooling with nasty exhaust always frozen
pipe bolts. The hood not heavy just two people each with a wrench = hood over your
shoulders no damage done. Whatever do not remove engine and transmission with
the common cherry picker cause it will take a nose dive unless you have the high end
picker that the front wheels slide way out or you need somebody to stand on the picker
back, that turns this into three people one to stand on it and two to pull it out LOL
Thats a chain fall job. sam

Jim, I've removed stock engines with the radiator and hood off. Of course I was younger and some may say even more stubborn than I am now.
LOTS of heavy blankets...

I've taken a 59A style motor from my 40 coupe without removing anything except the radiator. Mine was a deluxe model. I did take out the trans cover. If you undo the hood supports the hood will open higher than normal and in my case I tied it back to the rear bumper with a rope.

You have to attach the hoist to the motor very low down.

Mart.

I found a pic:

Seems like more risk to damage something than it's worth even if it can be done.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

I just changed a 8ba in a 40 pickup. Took out the radiator and the hood off
I did as mentioned above and took the manifold off the motor and left them in the chassis with the exhaust.

I also took the oil filter , carburetor , fuel pump with stand and distributor off . The less stuff to get hung up on something and had to swap all that stuff to the new motor anyway.
I also have a I beam with a chain hoist and trolley which is way easier then a cherry picker.

Junk cars i pull motors with a forklift....

A word of advice, sweep the floor before you try to roll the cherry picker....the tiniest piece of anything will stop you in your tracks and can be deadly

I removed the engine from my 39 DeLuxe like Mart did.

Yes, I’ve done it many times without removing the hood. Also removed and replaced the V-12 in my 39 Zephyr with hood on. The key to doing it with the hood on is keep the chain between the boom and hook short as possible and I remove the intake so I can hook as close to the engine as possible. This tool is very handy for lifting flatheads.

Thank you all very much for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Thanks, Mart, for posting that photo. My decision is pending as there's a strange "tinny" sound coming from the engine that comes and goes at idle. Great oil pressure and runs smooth. Can't figure out what it is.

Last time I removed the engine was in 1972 with a chain fall. I removed the hood myself, back then when I was 29 and back was fine. See photo of engine back then.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

Yes. I have done it several times. Did nothing but remove the radiator. Left the transmission in, unbolted the exhaust from the block only. If you look at Mart's photo, he did not need to unbolte the hood.

I too have that KRW tool Ken has that fits in the valley and it is quite handy, quick to put in and take out, those 2 pins keep it from moving.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question

My preference on my '39 is to remove grill and radiator only and take everything out the front...and keep everything as low as possible, relative to shop crane.....swaying engine over fenders makes me really nervous!! Putting '39 grill back in is an easy one person job. Putting hood back on is a two person for me!!:)

Over the past 20 years we;ve remover and installed a Ardun/C4 combination a dozen times. Have to install it this year again, come and watch. But we do take the hood off.

I've gotta ask.....WHO would waste a beautiful ARDUN on a slushbox transmission? Isn't that considered to be some sort of crime against nature? DD

Yes, I might agree, I suggested an AOD. It's beautiful car and MIGHT be up for sale soon????

Same way I do it. a lot less chance of something smacking a fender.
