'31 Fuel Filter
 

I'm trying to figure out how to install a fuel filter on my '31 coupe that has the indented fire wall with the original shut off valve. :confused:

Unscrew the fuel line under the tank and put one of those pencil filters in?

My '31 AA truck came with only a 90 deg. brass shut-off valve on the firewall and no glass bowl. The brass valve screws directly into the tank through the firewall. I don't know what the original setup was, but I added a good see-thru fuel filter inline before the carb. My carb (zenith) also has a screen at the input fitting. Since this is gravity flow, the filter should not be too restrictive.

What type of filter are you trying to install, an original side bowl or some type of aftermarket.
The picture is the side bowl.
That's the first time I've had a picture do that.

Same valve I have in picture, but I cut the fuel line midway between the valve and carb and added a filter with short pieces of fuel hose.

On my indented firewall '31 I added a pencil filter to the inlet side of the firewall valve.

If you're having a problem with an excessive amount of rust in the fuel tank, I would recommend using this...

Since this filter is cleanable and reusable, it won't leave you stranded on the side of the road with a clogged fuel filter. You can see how much loose material it is filtering out and let you know right away how well it's working. It has saved me a lot of grief.

I have an indented firewall in my 31 and installed a pencil filter. In order to use a pencil filter the shutoff valve on the firewall has to be removed. The pencil filter is then inserted into the inlet side of the valve. The valve is then reinstalled into the firewall.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I am not currently having any dirt/rust problems. Planning to rebuild my Tillitson and thought a filter would be a good addition. I may try the pencil filter ahead of the gas shut off valve.

I just did mine. Was having the same thoughts as you and what Ct Jack said.
another fella here on the Barn mentioned being able to do it that way, and never dawned on me that it would take a filter. I am so used to installing them under the dash/tank.

I also added a plastic filter right before the carb. Ive done this for yrs and never had a problem with ruining a carb.

When installing a pencil filter in an indented firewall valve, it seemed prudent to solder the filter into the valve. Being that the filter lays horizontal and the valve and filter tapers may not be perfectly matched, soldering them together greatly reduced the chance of the filter falling out of place by vibration. Mine has been trouble free.

From personal experience, if you're fighting with an excessive amount of rust like I was, the pencil filter will stop up quickly an shut you down before you get a mile down the road. Otherwise, it's a smart idea to install one as ndnchf describes above, and it preserves the stock look under the hood.
