Babbit job
 

I am in need of some one to pour new babbit and line bore my block. It also needs a couple valve seat inserts. Can anyone recommend a shop? I am in WV.

David, to get a realistic answer, I would think you really need to be a little more specific of where you want to go.

As I see it, if you are in the very top of WV, you are not that far from Kevin Pruss in Ohio. If you are in the lower side of WV, you are a couple hours from me. If you are in the upper east corner of WV, you are not that far to Schwalms in Strasburg, PA. If you are on the west side, you are within 3 hours or so to Ron's in Shandon, OH. Maybe tell us where you want to travel to and we can point you in the right direction.

UPDATE:

David, using the location on one of your classified ads, you are 200 miles away from Ron's Machine in Ohio just outside of Cincinnati. You are just under 250 miles from me in Tennessee. You are 250 miles away from Kevin Pruss in northern Ohio, and you are about 450 miles away from Ora at Schwalms. Does this help??

My new engine was done by Ron's Machine Shop (his name is BJ, his dad retired). Shandon, OH (Cincinatti area) If you are in the panhandle I'd avoid that big name shop over near Harrisburg / Hershey area. I had a super bad experience with them.

mY ENGINE HAS BEEN BACK ABT 6 WEEKS, AND IS NOT BROKE-IN YET.

Folks doing that type of work on engines probably have a couple shipping companies that they use often for shipping engines. They most likely can set up the shipping for you and all you need to do is strap it to a pallet and drop it off at the shipping company. Shipping an engine isn't terribly expensive.

Looking for someone in the Wisconsin area to do Babbitting.

I bought a 29 Model A 2 years ago with 2 engines and I am having fun. One engine works OK and I am able to tour. The other one I sent to my local engine rebuilder to rebuild, balance, and have it perfect. After 1 year and Covid he cannot find a Babbitt tech. The one he did use in Wausau, WI is retired. He cannot find another firm to just install Babbitt. Seems like others on the forum back in 2013 had success with inserts, My mechanics sells he is hearing horror stories with inserts! I am at a loss! I wanted to get the new motor perfect and sell the old one. Anyone have direction please!

Generally, I advise going with babbitt. There might come a day when the only thing we can do is inserts, but as long as there are still folks doing cast bearings I say use them.

If you want to do any major touring or driving, consider the Terry Burtz engine.
