Model A Mallory distributor, model K, type 13

Hello. Have a Mallory distributor, model K type 13. It is a dual point, mechanical advance, 4 cylinder model. There is a spring loaded, adjustable piston with a felt end(oiled), that rubs on the edge of the spinning lower plate that holds the two centrifugal weights. Does anyone know what this is for? Does it provide some "drag" on the plate, or what??? Thanks

Curiosity killed the cat! A model A brought him back.

Sounds like a vacuum brake as used on the V8 Dist. Does Dist. have a vacuum port?

Hello. Yes, there is a brass elbow that could be for vacuum. My only thought was some sort of brake. What is the function of this?? Thanks for getting back to me. - Mark

It's for spark control. The brake slows the moving advance plate under low vacuum conditions to automatically retard the spark.
