28/29 gas tank question
 

Hi yall just wondering sumpin. I am getting ready to bolt the gas tank on my 28 RPU . Do I need some sort of gasket or welting between the tank and the lower cowl/quarter panel /firewall section or is it just metal to metal?

I believe there is a welting like a 30/31 tank...correct me if im wrong

The body also has a welting underneath it as well

Ummm, actually there is a thin anti-squeak (looks much like friction tape) that goes between the tank and the cowl. The welting actually goes vertically between the cowl and the body up over the rear ledge of the tank and back down the other side.

It's as Brent said, but as Paul Harvey would say, Here's a strange.........it looks like the horizontal seam has a bead the same as the vertical bead. I think it's just the lighting on the weathered paint. This is a 29 unrestored original Phaeton. Notice the fabric reinforced rubber between the cowl and splash apron.

I used friction tape. It worked fine and didn't add much in height. I used contact cement to glue it in place so it wouldn't move when the tank was set in place.

Brent,

In all of your disassemblies of Model A's that were originally assembled back in 1928-29, is this your finding of the fricition tape on the horizontal outside line between the cowl and gas tank?

I have disassembled about eight over the years and have never seen any sign of any tape reminents but that does not mean that it never was there in the first place.

What about going along the firewall horizontal line?

However it is probably a good idea to put the tape atleast on the outside line.

I have also removed some gas tanks and have found nothing between the cowl & gas tank and gas tank and firewall. I figure it is cheap "insurance" to put friction tape in both places to make sure squeaks don't occur.

Mine is metal to metal, but I ran a bead of seam sealer along the join to ensure no water got through.
