Another new (old) guy 1929 Roadster PU
 

Hi,

I'm new here. I'm finally making progress on my 1929 Roadster Pickup that I bought on Labor Day 1971. My very young sons and I dismantled it and we worked on it off and on for 7 years (in between USN deployments) and then it went in our barn. I retired from the USN in 1980, but stagflation, under-employment, building a house and helping 4 kids through college delayed returning to the project. IO finally told me wife I was going to sell it (or rather the pieces). She said "NO you aren't." I said I have no shop to work in and I'm to old to work under a tree. "BUILD ONE!"

I did, 30 x 40 metal insulated. I have the frame and running gear finished and body in progress (second time for some of it) and the engine under rebuild. A long way to go, but I will only b 76 Tuesday and still have time to finish it and drive it a few years.

Way to go Ted. I too had mine, a basket case, for over 30 years before getting to it. Press on, and I hope you have many years driving it.

I bought my first one in 1961 and played with it for 20 years before I finally got around to refurbishing it. I won't claim to have restored it, but it needed serious attention or else. I still have it, and probably always will.

Glad you are back on it. Sounds like you have a "Model A wife" that supports you. Go for it and thanks for your service.

do not feel bad. 75 and have yet to purchase a car. Have garage and

quite a few parts but no car as yet.

You would not beleive if you work 1-2 hours a day on any project what you will get done, and the more you get done the more excited you will be to go on..!!

I know the feeling Ted, I bought a sedan in 1978 and like you started dismantling it with the help of my daughters (I still hear about that from them to this day). But like you building a house, getting children through college etc it didn't get done. But one day on a Model A drive my wife asks why we don't have roll up windows? I had been driving the phaeton all my life and didn't feel the need I guess. But it was close to the Continental divide, about 8000 feet and snowing so I could see her point came home in 2001 and went to work taking the sedan apart for total restoration. It is a great feeling when you fire it up and take your first drive. I look forward to meeting you on the Model A highway some time.

I agree fully ;I go out to the shop 2 to4 hours a day and sometimes its just sweeping and reorganizing things ,but gives you time to look at where your project is at and plan next move
Our wives must be sisters shes the same on projects and congrads on new shop and welcome

Hang in there Ted,
Mine was a 40 year project, dad bought it for me when I was 14
Then life got in the way, (wife, house, kids, college), after #3 got married, I told the wife it was MY turn. Had been collecting (and misplacing) parts all those years, and finally got it finished last winter.
Now I'm just waiting for the snow to melt to get it back out

I'm pretty sure that you will enjoy the "heck" out of it, once you start driving it,and however much you can drive it, will make great memories of good times. Stainless Steve is right, set an easily accomplished goal of hours per day, or per week. Stick to it, and you will be amazed, at your progress!

It Will get done with a little effort and time. Stay with it.

I have had my 29 CCPU, which I messed up in the 1950's, in our barn for many years. A couple of years ago I figured I had to either get rid of the junk in the barn or rebuild it. So I had to get a new body which ended up to be a Huckster body and it took me a year or so to get it put together. But now it is finished and drives well.

Due to the fact the old PU ended up being a Huckster rather than a "true blue" Model A style body, I ended up having to buy a completed 1929 STD coupe in 2011. So now guess I have the collectors "bug".

Seriously, if you can afford to get a Model A, do it before you talk yourself out of it! I almost talked myself out of gettin' one, just did it & I'm SO happy I did! I considered it like MONEY in the bank, NOT like a cost. Later got a second one. Had to sell one for care home $$$$$ for Pat, but still have my Avatar '29 & it'll be driving VERY soon. Bill W.

I like a woman who understands the needs of a workshop! Your post echoes the experiences a lot of us have had with our cars. A little work here a little work there and the next thing you know it's going down the road. Good Luck with your project. Is the corvair next?:)

I'm 76 retired Navy and finally have my last A. I've restored 55-57 Chevys for the past 30-40 years but the bad knees have finally caught up with me. 've been working on a 68 Buick convt and finally have it 90% finished, but I always remember the fun I had with my '29 A down in Kingsville Texas. Moved up to Chicago with it in the dead of winter and drove that A through the worst blizzards Chicago had ever seen in the 60's. Never stuck, never failed to start and run, never warm to drive...never let me down.
So I went out and bought one that was done and I'm happy as pig in mud with it.

Turned 80 last Nov. 1 so I bought me a running 1931 late steeltop Model A Pickup which I registered my birth date. Runs like a top. I have been working on a1930 Tudor basket case that I've been collecting parts since 1976. Body is done, chasis has the motor installed and running but motor needs new rings. I also have a 1931 Sport Coupe that I got 1n 1979 waiting in the wings to be restored. Just hope I have the time. Work some every day in heated shop. Great fun.Regards Grant
