Mitchell OD in a Victoria
 

Has anyone tried to install a regular Mitchell Overdrive in a 30-31 Victoria?
I understand that on the Victoria's they move the gear box forward 4.5 inches to clear the floorboard. I have a regular Mitchell and want to put it in the Victoria. Is there any other way to do this without moving the gearbox forward? Maybe someone has tried this?

Sure, take the rear floor pan/tub out of the sills. :D I'm sure you already knew this but the reason it is moved in to prevent interference.


Another option (which would be my preferred method if it was my vehicle) would be to sell the Mitchell and purchase a 3.27 gear set with the proceeds, and use the remaining proceeds to purchase a Stipe IB330 camshaft and a 6.0 high compression head.

We installed a Mitchel OD in a Victoria that was designed for a Victoria. It hits the floorboard when running over a road bump.
Has correct rear spring. Installed tubular shocks on the rear to help raise the body and they helped some. Next action will be to install another leaf in the spring. That is what Mitchel suggests. Concerned the additional leaf will make it sit too high in rear.

A stiffer rear spring is going to deteriorate the ride.

Interesting info about a Mitchell OD for a Vicky....
I didn't know that and I have a Vicky OD in my Cabriolet. Works fine.

Love the whole Mitchell system, trans and OD.

I had a Mitchell in my Victoria that was made for it with the gear box moved forward and it still hit the floor when going over a bumpy road. keep in mind that that the Victoria`s & A400 have the dropped floor pan. the Cabriolet have a flat floor.

In 1994 I installed a 23% Ryan overdrive in my Victoria. The Ryan sits back against the flange on the banjo. In order to make it fit I removed the dropped floor pan and cut away the back portion that sits under the back seat cushion. I had a panel welded to it and reinstalled it. see photo. I also replaced the eight leaf spring with a 10 leaf.


The Mitchell overdrive for a Victoria sits 4 & 1\2" forward on the drive train than does the standard Mitchell, In this case they are trying to clear the front of the dropped floor pan.


The Ryan overdrive was produced between 1990 and 2000. It is really a great overdrive, the one in my Victoria has over 50,000 miles on it without a problem.


The second photo shows a Ryan installed on a rear axle assembly. I recently found a 23% Ryan still new in the box at a swap meet.

Mitchell O/D wouldn't go into my '29 Phaerton either! I had to drasticall modify the box under the rear floor for the side curtains.y

I recently discovered that Mitchell has an overdrive for a town sedan (30 or 31) that has some kind of a factory installed tool box below the floor under the front seat that conflicts with the standard Mitchell. In this case the housing is shifted to the rear a few inches. I didn't see the car installation, only the shorter stub shaft when I rebuilt the rear axle assembly.

Tom, that's good info to know altho in my Town Sedan we installed the "tool box" upside down in order to make the floor flat. It was done this way so the front seat could be moved back ~3-4" to accommodate my long a$$ legs.[/FONT]

Not to undercut the Mitchell, but I just finished installing a 4-spd with overdrive in my Vickie. The complete kit was furnished by Dave Delume. It went in just as stated, no cutting or altering of the frame. Looks completely stock, and what a new driving experience. (no big box hanging below or two shifters in the cab with you. Very stock looking.

One of the advantages of a Mitchell or a Ryan over a four-speed is that in addition to an overdrive gear you have second gear overdrive. Good for climbing grades or coming down one.
