Grease Fitings
 

Hi,

Happy 2018!

Below should be a picture of a shackle. Am I correct that those are old school grease fittings and that the second picture is the tip that's required to grease them?

Yes, the more modern grease fittings have a small ball on the end.

I've changed most of my cars to the modern zerk. Easier to get grease into them.
If going for points, stay with original. Jeff

Not going for points. I prefer driving over shows but I do like keeping it reasonably stock. I fretted over spending double on headlight lenses today. I have two 30 to 31 lenses on my 28. One is yellowed. Have a spare but that is yellowed too. So the question was, "Should I buy two 28 to 29 lenses or buy one 30 to 31?" My budget one. For now it will have to have the 30's look. I like the fluted because they look more old timey but wasn't sure if they were good with light dispersion. I just put in 6 volt halogens and I am happy with the much needed brightness. You can't tell from the picture that the lens is yellowed but you can when observing. I also put in a radiator expansion tank as I could not get a warm feeling about how much water it had. This seems to keep the level viewable now. I painted it engine green.

you can use a mini grease gun on the old style. Poke the needle point into the hole. Its slow and and doesn't hold much but it works.

Yellowed glass can be cleaned, three parts water one part vinegar and let soak. Wash with dish soap and bluff ! Goggle is your friend!

Dan, I am like you. I drive my car but want to keep it close to original. But where did you get your radiator expansion tank? I would like to put one one mine. Thanks Johnny

I got the tank from MACs. Be sure to order the correct size as MACs literature says the 4 sizes all fit, which they do not. After an incorrect order, I settled on the smaller tank as it fit along the radiator. I have seen these same tanks elsewhere. They come in chrome and are well built. I sandblasted mine, then painted it. I just did not like the look of chrome. See pics for info on the tanks.

Dan, I wouldn't worry about the light dispersion of the fluted lenses. I run original 3-21 c.p. headlight bulbs on both my Model A's with fluted lenses. If the headlights are focused correctly, and your reflectors are re-silvered originals, they will throw a good beam of light.

I agree with Gary. My 28 has good lights with the original reflectors and bulbs with fluted lens.

Also I like my original grease fitting and use my original tool kit grease gun. They work just fine.

I only use modern type grease fittings .Original type fittings are too much of a pain for my use .

The quickest and easiest is with this era grease gun, one hand operation, just aim and push, modern fittings take 2 hands, got to take the coupler on-- off, then 2 hands to pump, I have enough for me, they can be bought for a couple of dollars at Hershey (there are some for 50$ too)takes a little more time to fill, but it could be several years between fillings

Don't go years between fillings, just grease the car more often.
