panels suitably resting on soft blankets or similiar, a competent assistant to hold things, then put rod into a good variable speed drill, a little oil, and slowly insert rod.

Mount the two sides of the top and then gently tap the rod in the loops starting on the back edge. This will require a helper to hold the hood side while you put in the rod, is probably the easiest way to do it. That is what I did on mine.

Didn't think the drill idea was a good one until I saw a body shop do it with a truck side storage box hinge -- the rod was more than 5 feet long. It took 2 to handle and get it done, but no damage to the paint. They sprayed a little WD-40 as it went in.
You will have to tap the last 3 inches --- but by then, you are done.
