Carb problims I have a zenith carb on my 1930 model a for at least 20 years. Now all of a sudden it will leak a lot of gas around the filter valve up front where the strainer part goes into. It has a new gasket on it. I do not try to start it but at a lost for how to correct the problems. Any ideas ?? Thank you in advance !

Re: Carb problims A couple of thoughts:
The threads of the carb upper casting might have some deterioration due to rusting and age. Back off the strainer 1/2 turn and see if there is wobble. The gasket material is not in itself able to stop the flow of fuel. I have a set up to test the fuel shut off and have found this area to be prone to leaks. I have had to put some thread sealer on there and/or really snug up the strainer. Make sure the casting is not cracked from over snugging the strainer:D:eek: Jerry |
Re: Carb problims I might put this one to the compression fitting where the gas line ties into the carb. This one is adjacent to the fuel filter and the fittings as being provided by the parts people are particularly poor quality.
Now everyone seem to has replacement gas lines with the fittings included - these are compression in theory, have a "shear off" seal ring made as part of the hex, emulate perfectly the original two piece (hex fitting and seal ring) when in place, but in my experience, leak like a sieve. You can buy the old fashioned hex fitting and ring separately - most don't because they're handed the one piece hex/seal and "why do I need a better fitting when one is included." I'll take a leak tight gas line for $200 Alex. Maybe that's reason enough? Joe K |

Re: Carb problims Sealer is not recommended anywhere on a carb, it will only mask the real problem. Sealer if used on a carb also has a tendency to dissolve/deteriorate and cause other issues like clogging carb jets/passages.

Re: Carb problims I've never had any problem with a thin smear of blue hylomar on gaskets for 90 year old carbs! this problem in OP #1 could be as others have said fuel inlet union .

From my experience. Once the sealer has set up and seals all may be OK, but if the seal is tightened or the part is taken loose the sealer can break apart/up. So it is best if using sealer to completely clean it completely, and reapply fresh if adjusting, or taking things apart. I had small bits of hardened sealer get into the passages, jets, wells when I took apart a carb, did not get rid/clean of all the old sealer out of the carb before reassembling. |
