Oil gallery plug screw.. remove?
 

Guys Ive tried everything I can think of to remove the rear oil gallery plug / screw, heat , Impact driver ..Pfft! wont budge , anyone have any other tricks up their sleeve, as now its getting too butchered..:rolleyes:

Rob, its only brass, so it will be easy to drill it out,just dont get the idea you will be able to use a screw extractor,drill it out enough so you can pick out the last remains of the thread.

Try heat(torch) with block standing on end. Then melt some parafin into the threads, this always works for me on stubborn bolts.
Or if you have a mig welder, weld a washer to plug, then nut to washer and it will come out.
Of course you’ll need a new plug, but I’m sure with all the cracked blocks around that won’t be hard to find.
Edit, are you sure that’s brass?

Its brass for sure.. I think Im down at your end of the stick Lawrie , someone must have used a good Loctite!

just drilled one out and use a square shank screw extractor, so it did not add pressure to the threads like one of the spiral screw extractor do

Rob, Yes, being brass, as a last resort you can drill it out. It's only about 1/4-5/16 long. However, what i've done in the past to remove the stubborn ones, is to stand the block up with its front face down,in a hydraulic press. Use a square shank screwdriver that fits the slot well, and hold it in place with the hydraulic ram. It can't slide out with the ram holding it in place. Use a suitable wrench on the square shank to apply torque to the screw. It will move....however, your one is probably too buggered up by now to try this.
Obviously, you need a decent sized press....

Mmm My press is a bit small for that caper.. The plug wasn't that great to start with, which made the job that much more of a joy.. I assume the brass plug has a bit of a taper on it, I'd be right with a Grub screw and some 577 or thread tape be ok to replace?

what brian said is good advise for sure, but i havent heard any mention of flat out violence yet. "shock it' by that i mean get a tool that fits correctly, and give a good whack, heavy 3lb hammer, to persuade the inanimate object that you are a superior being and will win in a fight. its brass, a shock should knock it loose, then, if not...start drilling

Ive been giving it some with an impact driver.. no luck, bastard wont move..

impact driver is trying to turn it. "shocking it" is a downward force. most times i want to remove things like , head studs for example, things threaded into a blind hole, the first thing i do is give it a good whack, a downward act of violence (in theory) will knock the threads a bit to allow some movement. even though your impact driver is supposed to do that, give it a good blow before starting with that tool to "soften " it up a bit . the block is tuff, i think you can get pretty wild without breaking anything. brians thoughts of a press or a big drill press is the next option before drilling it out as laurie suggested. best wishes

Rob, dont use a grub screw it will be too long and interfere with the oil path.

I use the impactdriver on them and some just refuse to come out whatever you do...that end you can replace with any pipe plug at hand that ends up flush with the surface.
Usually ends up drilling and tapping...not to sensitive just get at it and don´t spend more time thinking...
The other end with the restrictor needs to come out in one piece for reuse preferably.

Is it necessary to remove the fuel pump bushing also? My understanding is that it intersects the main oil passage.

You can't rod out the oil passage without removing the bushing. It is very thin walled. I machined a special driver to push them in and out.

On the pipe plug. I use a torx bit. I drill a hole just under the diameter of the bit and then grind the end of the bit so the edges are sharp. Driving it in produces splines which grab very well and do not push out on the plug. It has never failed.

Yes you have to remove the bush if you want to go 'the other way' .
