S/W 1931 Town Sedan Wiper Removal

Brand new, first time owner here. I'm trying to learn all I can about my new baby. She's having trouble wiping the windshield. What is the procedure for removing the wiper? I believe it is the original vacuum motor. Step by step with plenty of details about potential problems would be appreciated.

You may try oiling it first before removing. Not sure if that will fix the issue, but it is a place to start. Basic instructions can be found here: http://modelabasics.com/wiper.htm

Also here: http://www.mafca.com/downloads/Techn...um%20Wiper.pdf

Search around on the forums as well. You might find the answer there.

By the way, I am a new owner of a 31 SW Town Sedan too. Welcome aboard! You'll find the search feature of the forums an indispensable tool. :)

One more link: http://www.mafca.com/tqa_wipers.html

Get Les Andrews Model A Vol 1 book too if you haven't already. Tons of great info in there and possibly even a step by step on what you are looking for. I don't have my copy with me or I would look to see.

I too have a Slant (Model 160B); my wiper motor works great, and I have a new wiper blade, but it does not do a great job of clearing that part of the windshield in the rain. Your results may differ.

I keep reading..."just use RainX."

So, there's that. :D

They all are just ok at best. Squirt some 3 in 1 oil into the hose inlet on the wiper, more the blade back and forth a few times and squirt again. The fact that it moves at all tell me to give this a try first.

I really appreciate the tips about oiling the motor and will certainly give it a try asap. I would still like to know how to remove it since this model apparently does not have the two mounting bolts like most pictures I have seen.

I look forward to more knowledge and helpful tips from you guys in the future. I;m sure my questions have just begun.

remove the hose inside car, push up on spring loaded retainer clip on the wiper arm and lift off the groove on the shaft, pull the "wire"wiper arm out of the shaft, remove the nut and washer from the shaft where it comes out the header, pull wiper in thru the header.

Re: S/W 1931 Town Sedan Wiper Removal

Thanks jetmek. That's what I originally thought. When I started to do that, I found that the shaft was offset to the driver side and the hole itself would not allow me to get a 7/16 socket through it to reach the nut. At that point I thought there must be another method. I would attach a picture but don't have a place to store them with a url to get to them.

I have very carefully managed to enlarge the hole enough to get the nut off and now have the wiper motor out. Probably would not have done that without your post saying that is the proper way to remove it. Btw, it had no washer. Will use one when installing.

Maybe this will work to show the initial problem with the wiper installation.

Nice car! I just bought a '31 Slant barn find and can't wait to get her running again. She's been asleep in a garage since 1992.
