Ford script cast in block just above water intake?

1 Attachment(s)
I was recently sent a photo of a Model A engine with a Ford script cast into the block just above the water intake (below the engine number block). Under the Ford script are the letters "GS". The engine is supposedly from late 1931. Here's the photo:

Is this really a Model A engine block?

Was that Ford script associated with a certain year?

Could this be a foreign cast engine block?

What do the letters "GS" stand for??

Does the engine number block look like it has been ground off and re-stamped?

Please share any insight that you might have,

I have had Dagenham "B" engines with "GS" but no Ford script . I have not been able to find out what foundry it was but I am certain it will be English . Check to see if the serial number is in one of the blocks of serials issued to Ford of England . I think the foundry was an outaide surplier like diamond blocks in USA . I think your number will be late 31 and most likely assembled at Dagenham not Manchester .

I have a Model B engine with GS in larger letters in the same place,
but no Ford Script. The engine was on a WW2 Fire pump
There are pictures of it on Vince's site

I think they were cast on there to show that they were built for Government Service

Anyone else have any ideas??

Brad,
There are also some entries in the daily engine logs that have GOV on them. Maybe this engine number falls into one of those blocks.

I have a 'GS' B block in for machining at the moment. It's certainly heavier with a thicker deck. I'll pop it on the scales next time I see it...

I recently sold a USA diamond "B" block and a Dagenham "B" block . The Dagenham block top deck was thicker by at least 1/8" maybe a bit more than that .I should have weighed them to see the difference . The Dagenham "B" block( not GS) came out of an English AA truck first registered in 1936, AA 49811xx . I parted the truck out as it was too far gone ,the crank is in my sons 29 pickup . English "B" blocks do not seem to have the crack problems the USA one have, they have the same durability as an "A" block .

John in same place same weather .
