Not as big a job as it would be if the engine well in there!!:D |

You will need to remove the transmission cover to access the rear transmission mount as well as the torque tube coupling. A very straight forward project... |

This is a VERY EASY job with the engine removed. Here's the procedure I would use. 1. Place a floor jack, with a piece of carpet on the jack's saddle, under the flat part of the case. Raise slightly to take the tension off of the torque tube connection collar. 2. Un-do the four bolts that hold the torque tube bell collar to the rear of the transmission. To POSSIBLY make getting the gearshift stick a little easier to wiggle out of the way when you lower the transmission, you might consider placing the shifter in NEUTRAL, removing the six bolts that hold the shifter assembly onto the transmission, and lifting the shifter assembly straight up and out of the trans. 3. OOPS....Don't forget to disconnect the clutch linkage clevis from the clutch release arm at left, front of transmission. 4. Unbolt the two large, vertical bolts that hold the rear mount to the frame. 5. Now, place one hand on the top of the bellhousing surface (where the trans bolts to the engine) to hold the trans steady on the jack. Pull FORWARD on the trans AND the jack about three inches to pull the U-joint free of the drive shaft splines. 6. Now, carefully lower the floor jack and that puppy is OUT! Easy 'nuff? DD |

Re: 39 Ford/Mercury transmission Removal If this is out of Grandpa's car, it's important that you check the numbers on the trans. They might match the frame number and paperwork. If so this is the original trans to the vehicle and should stay with it.
If it is from that car I would not do anything with it until I have ascertained the viability of the rest of the vehicle. If you can see a way forward with the rest of the car re the bodywork, then the trans is probably one of the easier items to deal with. Empty any water out. Fill it with oil and set it to one side in dry conditions until the whole vehicle -plan has been decided upon. Being a 39 and a Merc, it should have the better synchros and shift tower. Pull the top and take some photos of the insides. Let us have a look if you want some clued up advice rather than wild guesses based on assumptions. Mart. |

Here is a picture of the inside of the transmission i dont think my paperwork has the transmission number in it just the motor number but if I understand right as far as grandpa knew it was the original transmission

Look at the number stamped into the flat pad at top of the bell toward front of trans,, above the little window. Hopefully, that number matches the number stamped into your front, left frame rail near the front crossmember. That is the car's official serial number, or ID number. Ford had NO "motor" numbers from the factory. DD |
