Here are a few "take aways" for me...

It certainly is an "old guys" hobby. The average age of ownership is probably even higher than this poll indicates since the older we get, the less likely we are to embrace technology...like computers and on line forums. ;)

It is probably going to be harder to find enthusiasts for Model As as us old guys become fewer and fewer. There will probably come the day when seeing a Model A in the wild will be VERY rare. Maybe like seeing a horse and buggy now.

Don't count on our kids or grandkids getting excited about inheriting our As. The numbers aren't showing much of an interest under the age of 60.

We shouldn't let this detract from the enjoyment of our cars. Our parents and grandparents had interests other than ours (for the most part). Our kids and grandkids have interests other than ours (for the most part). So what?

Hmph. Kids are kids. Kids wanna be cool. As are cool. And the number of old guys will never decline. Future = assured.

Yup ...What Dick says. I would venture in a short amount in time vintage cars will will no longer be allowed on the roads. Law makers will be pressured to change motoring habits. What we are now living is the end of a grand era. I attend "power parking" car shows and look on the show field of all these latent dreams that folks have created. There will never be enough museums to put them in. We can keep pumping smoke up our own skirts but for the most part I'm still enjoying the dream. With each passing year I'm more afraid of driving our Tudor. I don't worry so much about the car but of getting injured. Driving by the masses has become a lost art. At least where we live.

Have 7 & 11 yr old grand kids that love them, will that continue, who knows. My son likes them, will he keep all of them or sell a few or all, who knows. I know this, I enjoy them and will as long as I can, maybe to my last breath. What happens to them at that point is beyond my control and I do not worry about the cars future. My son is car savy and if he sells it will be at a fair price, not a give away. Neither of us need the extra money that a sale would provide, so that issue is not there as often is.
In the next few minutes we'll go as a family to cut a Christmas tree, we'll drive there in our '29 CCPU and take pics, as we have for a number of years. Will that and all the other rides we take make the grand kids want to keep them , I hope so. The 11 yr old wants to drive the '29 Coupe to school when he gets his drivers license in 5 years, I hope he will have Model As in his mind for the rest of his life..as I did in mine.


One other thing about driving the '29 to the Christmas tree farm. When we get there almost everyone admires the truck and usually a few people ask if it is for sale. I think there are many people out there with disposable income to get into As, and that may well be the future of our hobby..

In reply to this, I am 74. When I got into the hobby, I was about 65. There weren't any A s in my neighborhood, town, or county (Essex co, NJ) My only contact was with my father's cousin, who had two AA flatbed trucks and in a few years they went to the fields. The Mod A was definitely foreign to my experience.I had pretty much the same view of that everyone else had. It was cheap and junky, and Ford just made them to have something new to give to the public cause they were getting sick of the T. With only 40 HP it wasn't much of a car. At least it wasn't a planetary two speed! I had little appreciation for the A's qualities. I didn't get interested in A's until my late fifties and didn't actually buy one until I was 65

With the advent of self driving cars, we as drivers will be banned from the roads as we are not predictable in our actions.

How would they reconcile that "logic" with the push for more people to ride bicycles on the road?.

That is why our tax money is being used for separate bike lanes. At least here in the U.S..

Well, my grandchildren are age 3, 2, 5months, and one due in May, and they all will have a Model A. I just hope that they will all enjoy them as much as I have when the time comes that I can't enjoy them anymore.

They're still trying to figure a use. It is just the plumbing problem that is troublesome! Here is the next best thing. You could even make it run your Ford.

Don't worry, the self-appointed do-gooders will come up with all sorts of twisted reasons! "They don't meet emissions standards! They don't meet 'safety' standards! They don't meet fuel mileage standards! They don't meet minimum speed requirements! They don't meet HOA standards! They don't... They don't...………".

But we humans can tell the difference between a small child in the road and his big dog near him. If hitting one is unavoidable, which will the automated car hit?? That would be a random choice, I'm thinking. Me? I'd go for the dog every time.

Putting those self driving cars on the road raises some very difficult moral problems. How can you on the one hand, program them to protect the occupants in one situation when in another, that might cause death or injury to more people who happen to not be occupants of the car? For example, a self driving car with one occupant is heading for an unavoidable collision with another with 4 occupants. Does it try to save its one occupant at the expense of the other four? I see great danger on programming machines to make moral and ethical decisions.
On another note entirely but still self driving acrs, engineers from several casr companies have spent time in Australia trying to work out how to program their cars for some of our wildlife. They found it near impossible because when the car's sensors detected a Kangaroo, it couldn't work out how far away it was. When it was on the ground, it might conclude (say) 50 metres but when it was at the top of its bound, the car was measuring (say) 400 metres. Ever seen a confused car????:rolleyes:

In Seattle bicycle commuting is down from 4% in 2014 to 2.8% in 2017. That’s with miles of streets being redesigned with lanes taken away from cars to accommodate bikes. When you think of that is equal to 12,000 compared to? Total commuters, that’s a lot of wasted dollars and roads. However cars are evil, so enjoy while you can!
