I am just trying to find out how difficult it would be to remove and replace the rear panel on a '31 roadster.The panel below deck lid.Also are any of the ones available good or all the same,like Brookville or Howell's? Does it get welded in place or bolted in? I guess it then needs filled in on the ends to blend in with quarters? Someone replaced or patched mine years ago and there is not even the bead on the bottom.Guess now would be the time to fix it but car really does not need a complete paint job so matching Kewannee green will be tough.I bought a can from Ford barner last month it is old lacquer from Mark Co.

The lower deck lid panel is bolted to the 1/4 panels with 1/4 flat head bolts and the lower edge bolts to the rear body crossmember with pan head 10/32 screws if I remember rightly. The new panels can be a little higher than the originals and the shape side to side can be to flat. So take some time and measure up the new panel. You may have to rework it before you put it in or you will loose the gap for the decl lid. JP

I did not realize that it bolted in.So it could be fitted and when that was accomplished painted before installing? Or was side seams filled in?

From your description the seam on each side between the panel and quarter may be filled by PO. If this is the case you may have a problem with the paint in this area. Pictures would help with a fix. In any case, when I replaced my lower panel, rumble seat, I found that the top of the panel and the rumble lid did not fit. Removed the panel and removed the upper cross brace and replaced it with the original cross brace removed from original panel and the panel fit like original.

There is no filler or seam sealer between the panel and the 1/4's. After you've fitted everything then I would paint the edges and inside and then bolt everything back up and paint the body assembled. Desotoguy has it right with using the original inner structure. This way you have something with the right shape to work to. Have Fun. JP

Is this the original cross brace you are referring to? This is built in the reproductions? I think this is what the curved inner panel attaches to.

37, I recently replaced that panel on my '29. The first two panels I sent back, the measurements weren't close. For example the height of the '29 panel is supposed to be 7 and 1/2" tall. The ones that I received were over 7 and 3/4", making it impossible to close the trunk lid. I finally took the panel to a friends shop and we sheared off 5/16" and made my own panel. Everything including the cross brace bolts in.
