Gas gauge wire

Could someone show a good picture or dimensions - lengths, angles etc. of an unmolested gas gage float rod? Can't seem to get a good starting adjustment point.

Thanks, John

That's going to be a hard one

It appears that there is no left or right bend, straight ahead - only up and down for correct reading?

Re: Gas gauge wire

Because the fuel gauge is most important when the tank is near empty, I set the wire so the gauge reads “0” when the float is on the bottom of the tank. It’s trial and error but not difficult. What happens when the tank is half full, quarter full, brimming full doesn’t really concern me, though mine are pretty close right through the range.
If I’m running real close, I yank on the steering wheel, left, then right and watch the gauge to see if it moves at all. Even the smallest slurp of fuel is enough to make it move and when it doesn’t move,I know it’s time to get ready for a walk.:D

As I was posting I wondered about the "gas strainer" and if wire is bent for that.

I took out my strainer 55 years ago therefore wire does NOT hit my strainer. :D

Took too long to pump gas even with the Gas-A-Mat gravity feed pumps they had at the time.

picture in SB 463 does not show the other bends

see post 8

Re: Gas gauge wire

See post #6 for shape same as Berts repro gauge.

1 1/2 to first right 30 degree bend

Offset is 1 1/4 to clear strainer

3 inches to next left 30 degree bend

and 3 7/8ths to left 90 degree bend for cork float.

Above measurements are from Bert's A-9312 repro gauge on parts shelf.

"They" say, if it reads "F", when float is against the top of the tank, then when it reads "E", you'll have about a GALLON left.

With a straight rod and no strainer or a bent rod to clear a strainer? It seems to me the rod bent around to clear a strainer would in effect be shorter and give a different reading.

Thal's correct. If you want a straight rod, copy Benson's dimensions to a piece of paper (more like 30 degrees) and measure the length. Around 7-1/2" I would guess.

That can be overcome by carrying a Gallon can of GAS, in the back.
