water pump end play how to stop? I just bought a 1929 Model A, and am having the engine rebuilt. I have found in taking the water pump off that the new fan on the shaft was loose, how do I tighten fan and get rid of end play?

Re: water pump end play how to stop? Are you sure it was the fan on the shaft or is it play in the shaft in the water pump housing? If it is the shaft, which is REAL common, you can rebuild or buy a rebuilt water pump. However, a much cheaper fix is to buy a collar from any of the vendors.

Re: water pump end play how to stop? It is most likely just too much end play in the shaft. Try one of these https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...l-a/water-pump

Re: water pump end play how to stop? I drilled the head for a stainless pan head screw---- this way stock parts fit , no modifications needed

Re: water pump end play how to stop? I either use the longer water pump shaft and grind for at least six thousands clearance at the rear of the shaft where it meets inside the head . There is a collar that can be installed on the water pump shaft , behind the fan and the pump doesn't need to be disassembled .

Re: water pump end play how to stop? What kind of fan did you get? It is possible the shaft and fan angles don’t match. Also on an aluminum two blade fan, you need a washer behind the nut to keep from biting into the aluminum and eventually coming loose and wallowing out.

Re: water pump end play how to stop? Is there any type of repair to the stop block in the head it self? I have an old head laying around and it appears that some sort of flat bottom U shaped spacer would maybe work if the problem is caused by this.

Re: water pump end play how to stop? I just took the pump apart on my AA and it had a nice little two piece brass collar on the shaft behind the fan. The shaft and impeller, bushing etc.,. needs replacing but the roller bearing looks like new.
