1940 Ford Truck handle

I would like to unlock my truck handle latch and than remove the key. Currently my Bob Drake handle will not allow me to do this. Can someone please advise what alteration I can make to the key so it can be removed from the latch after unlocking the latch?

Thanks,

Daryl

I think you are talking about a trunk lock. The best method I have found is to grind the key handle end down so that you can close the keyhole cover over it. If you want it locked just remove the key

I got my Drake handle from Mac's, but the key comes out, locked or unlocked.
Try your favorite lube and work it back and forth, it should come out.

My handle is a Drake from the early '90s. Key won't come out unlocked.

Key wont come out of my Drake handle. Wonder if Bruce's is a Vintique or ?? I would gladly change mine.

The key does not come out on these handles and cylinders when in the unlocked position as original.

Strange
The Drake handle I put one my dads 40 can be unlocked w key out

Id think a old / good lock smith could make it happen blindfolded

Considering the way the lock cylinder is constructed, I doubt that any locksmith could modify it so you could remove the key when the cylinder is in the unlocked position (Unless he removed all of the internal slugs; then you could remove the key no matter what position the cylinder is in... except that then anyone with a pocket knife or small screwdriver could also unlock your trunk!).

The original 1940 Ford trunk lock cylinder has to have the key inserted and then rotated 180 degrees for the handle to unlock. The key can not be removed without rotating it back 180 degrees to the locked position.

Bob Drake's reproduction 1940 Ford Trunk handles differ from original in that you only have to rotate the key 90 degrees in order to unlock the trunk, but once again you must rotate the key back to the locked position before you can remove it.

Best regards,

A little over a year ago someone on the Ford Barn did this to his '40. He said he got tired of unlocking the truck to get the lawn chairs out! He said it was pretty 'straight forward' and he figured it out. Hopefully, he will 'chime in' and share with us?
