Gertrude also (like grandmother) has problems with his teeth, some are powdered others are missing, I want to miss her the third: ASK: 1. Nut thread right, loosen normal anti clock wise? 2. Torque lbf ft / Nm x 1.356 ? 3. Have your tips to block the camshaft? Mother glow, or should I reflex? Guten Morgen von der Ostsee, Gertrud hat ebenfalls (wie Großmutter), Probleme mit den Zähnen, einige sind pulverisiert andere fehlen, ich will ihr die Dritten verpassen: FRAGEN: 1. Mutter Gewinde rechts, Lösen normal anti clock wise? 2. Drehmoment lbf ft/Nm x 1,356 3. Habt Ihr Tipps die camshaft zu blockieren? Mutter glühen, oder soll ich die Abflexen? |
Re: camshaft nut problems 1) It is a standard right hand thread ( Clockwise to tighten , counter clockwise to loosen)
2) Brattons catalog suggests 100 ft lbs ( which I reckon is very very tight!) 3) A popular method is to jam a old cloth rag in the teeth ( or a piece of wood has been suggested) |

Re: camshaft nut problems a)If the nut is the stock camshaft nut ( eg brattons 8770) you need the special fitting to go on it ( but you might get away with a good girder spanner)
b)If you have the modern hex nut then a good fitting socket C) then select good fitting wrench/spanner to fit and bash the spanner with a hammer? I take no responsibilty! |

Re: camshaft nut problems I once had a 24 inch breaker bar on that darned nut, pulling for all my life to loosen it. When it finally let go, I ended up doing a backward somersault!

Re: camshaft nut problems "Mutter gluehen". Yes, I have had to heat those darned nuts in the past to get them loose. Lord only knows what gorilla had tightened them in the past, but it was definitely overkill. The main problem with heating those nuts is that the fiber timing gear usually catches fire or at least gets hot enough to smoke. It's going to be replaced anyway, but who needs a fire here? :) Follow the advice of others and install the hex-headed nut. It will make life easier on the next guy, who has to change timing gears beside a lonely back road.

Re: camshaft nut problems Most people that I know use a chisel and hammer to loosen that nut. They also tighten it in the same manner, which is why the nuts are so buggered up in the first place. Just place the chisel towards the outside edge of the flat side of the nut and hit it well with the hammer. It works, but is not kind to the nut.

its over fini fin end of my sorrows :D I cut the nut that nut must be a torque 100 ft lbs will be 133 Newtonmeter - absolut no posibility to become a loosen nut !! many thanks to all of you |

Re: camshaft nut problems I use 2 slats of wood 3/8 x 1-1/2 inches about 2-1/2 inches long. Place the slats on both sides of the timing gear and secure them with a "C" clamp. The bottom of the inside slat will come to rest on the pan and stop the timing gear from turning. I use an air impact wrench on the real tight cam nuts. This is a last resort, however, it always works for me.
