A bit about modern oils. For the purist, I know, I know, but you can't get the old stuff...

I have to admit, that was fascinating, and I learned a few things. Admittedly, he is talking about today's modern, tight-tolerance engines, and it doesn't apply so much to our 90-year-old engines.

As a kid, always with an old, beat up car, as it started to burn oil the natural thing to do was to change to a thicker oil. I know that in today's modern cars you just don't do that. This helps explain why. I especially liked his explanation on making choices about changing to a different dual viscosity oil.

The last thing I think about is efficiency,I have a modern car for that.Whats paramount in my view for my A is protection,Viscosity plays a role,but shear and load characteristics are more important to me,its why I use diesel grade engine oils,overkill protection against load failure and shear.

I use the same multi grade diesel rated oil in our Model A that I use in our diesel farm tractors and diesel grain truck. 15-40 weight.

My 2019 Porsche Macan calls for 0w-20 oil in the USA and for 5w-30 oil in other markets.

I am thinking the manufacturers now are calling for oil grades to give them a slightly better CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) in the US and what protects better in other markets.

Not all manufacturer specs are based on what's best for the auto.....IMHO.

I am still trying to decide what oil I wanna run in my 1931 Model A with insert bearings. Probably 20w-50 synthetic sounds good to me though, as I'm in a warm climate with all cold starts over 50 degrees Farhenheit.

Rotella 15-40 in the A and some other stuff.

Mobil 1 5-20 in the everyday vehicles.

El Cheapo 20W50 in my As and change at about 1,000 miles - 3,500 miles if I'm on a long tour where the motor is running warm all day. I run a full flow filter.

I run Rotella 15-40 in everything except the Solstice and Avalanche. Not because i think there is anything special about Rotella, they took most of the zinc out of diesel oils close to 10 years ago, I use it because I buy in bulk and that's what I use in my diesels. I also use it in the hydraulic system in my sprayer.

Kendall GT-1 has ZDDP blended in, it says on the front of the bottle. You can buy it at Farm King for about $4 a bottle. 10W40.

That or add a bottle of ZDDP you can buy from the Model A parts vendors for about 10 bucks and add it to your favorite motor oil.

I've just run Motorcraft 10W30 or 10W40 with a bottle of ZDDP for years. No problems.
