Pencil filter
 

I noticed my gas flow to the carb decreased, so I emptied out the tank and noticed a tiny piece of sediment at the gas tank hole entrance to the fuel shut off valve. cleared it, and the flow was back to normal. I then installed the pencil filter, is that sufficient to keep most sediment from entering the Carb?

Yep. That is what it is there for. I have had one in for years and no troubles.

There is a screen in the sediment bowl and another one in the
carburetor inlet.

When I started to get my pickup back on the road I realized I had a real problem with sediment in the tank because I couldn’t get any decent fuel flow. Thought my only option was to pull the tank. Installed a pencil filter on top of the gas valve and all my fuel delivery problems went away. The screen is extremely fine mesh - should be all you need.

Any crap small enough to get through that filter is small enough to go through any of the carby jets so it is all you need. That said, I use the others too. Belt and braces!

Be awfully careful with inline filters. Model A's generally don't care for them. Gas flow will stop in the worst possible situation. ie. long bridge, huge intersection, when you have no tools. When in a tour with all kinds of tools and help it will refuse to fail, unless you are leading the pack on a narrow winding road late in the evening.

You need to be sure it a fuel filter for gravity tanks like those on motorcycles not ones for use with fuel pumps.

I did see one comment recently about adding an additional small piece of copper tubing between the gas shutoff and the pencil filter, decreases tank capacity slightly, but allows more junk to settle on the bottom of the tank instead of going through the or blocking the shutoff. Additionally some hang a magnet from the fuel filler opening, with the magnet on the bottom of the tank. Some recommend putting a magnet in the Sediment bowl.


Here a few strings on a Sediment Bowl micro filter that replaces the sediment bowl screen, and other added inline filters. Some think there are great, others have had problems. If you do a search there is more info.

Just be aware that the pencil filter is a maintenance item. I am replacing a lot of them that went in during the first wave of 7 - 10 years ago (? not sure when they first appeared)... most are completely eroded away allowing a rust plug to form in the valve or in the wider diameter and hence lower velocity inside gas line. Heavy sediment never makes it to the sediment bulb. I bore out the very small diameter opening in the filters to prolong their useful lifetime.
