40 Drag Link and Tie Rod Install

I was wondering what the proper way to install an after market drag link and tie rod is. Nuts up or nuts down? I have seen them up in some pictures and down in others. Also the rubber boots, are they necessary when you have steel cups on the ends? Working on a 40 wagon.

You could get a more relevant answer than this one on the 'Early' pre-'54 forum, at this link...

Just in general, and baring any clearance complications, tapered fittings or enhancements like cotter pins & self-locking nuts, I think that a nut should be below the bolt if possible.
So if the nut somehow falls off, the bolt still has a passing chance of (loosely) staying in place, instead of more quickly falling out.

The female/male part of the connection of the tie rod ends ARE tapered and will only go one way. I'm not sure about the '40, but my on my '38 the tie rod ends insert into the spindle and pitman connections from the bottom, the nut is on top.
