Rebuilt transmission noise
 

If you copy this link to YouTube it will show you the noise that I am experiencing. The transmission has been rebuilt mostly all new gears and 600 weight oil.The noise is only when the transmission is a neutral with the clutch pedal out. I would appreciate any thoughts on what the problem is. Thank you in advance.

Unavailable video, but the only thing turning is the input shaft, cluster, and its bearings.

The video link does not work.

I am only guessing but I would look at the bearings and alignment of the bell housing.

Check pilot bearing, and the cluster gear would be turning also and there has been problems with the reproduction bearings in the cluster.

The reproduction caged type bearings used in the input to main shaft connection and the counter shaft cluster gear for the early Ford transmissions have been problematic.

Run it some, let it break in. This is one area where Ford precision machining was not up to the task, assemblers at the Rouge had boxes of sliders clusters and shafts and would hand fit transmissions. Drain and check oil for metal, if it looks good run it a thousand miles check again..

I recall seeing it in the oral histories, don't remember which one. Ford clearly ran their production lines based on sound machining practice and interchangeability. Few grasp that manufacture of complex units having 5000 pieces, to the tune of 9000 units a day..it truly boggles the mind. The way I read it was the assemblers saved sliders, clusters and main gears at their bench, fitting for proper feel as they went. This clearly goes against Fords manufacturing process, a rejected item was immediately scrapped.. I get that, and I understand your skepticism, If I run across this information again I will share it, the oral histories don't allow for keyword search or quick reference.. I like that, great reading for a winters day.

The above YouTube site works for me, but if you copy it and then paste it onto YouTube it works or you can Just do a search my entering ‘model a Ford transmission noise’. I know about the needle Reproduction bearing problems so I used the ones I had which are the better ones and not worn. I replaced the input shaft, the main shaft, the two main ball bearings and the first/reverse gear, everything else looked to me good. I also Shimmed/aligned the fly wheel. I drove it for about 10 miles, everything shifted perfectly no unusual noise other than described above.

For those unaware, in the early 1950's Ford commissioned oral histories be taken from those who were there from the beginning..be warned, for a Ford history nut these are like crack cocaine, highly addictive..

I did the post model a Ford transmission noise’ in YOU TUBE. Interesting noise. My car does a similar noise once in a great a while. Same thing in Neutral only and with clutch out. I drive it and it goes away. Like I said it has been very rare but happened, although I think softer in volume.

The poor quality roller bearing design that has been on the market for the last few years will generally come apart after 300-400 miles and the transmission will become noisy. See the attached.

I understand that Bert's in Denver, Colorado, has good tranny bearings.
