Engine Bolt question
 

Hopefully easy question. Was wondering the function of the bolt circled on the passenger's side. I do have an oil seepage issue, and will likely result in replacing gaskets, but I was wondering about this as it also had a screw slot in it.

Looks as tho someone jammed a dist hold down screw in there. Wrong threads. It wants a 1/8 pipe plug. It serves no purpose other than to plug the hole

Originally it was a brass slotted plug with a gas thread . To hold the oil pump in place when the oil pan is dropped some folks screw in a bolt to stop the oil pump falling out . A UNF thread bolt is not a gas thread and the thread in the block gets damaged hence some weeping can occur . A fix is to use the white plumbers tape wrapped around the bolt if you are careful.. the block thread is damaged anyway so no more harm can be done You might be lucky that the slotted plug with the nut could be the correct thread .

Someone had butchered mine in the same way. I put a bolt in with a lock nut to hold the bolt in place without tightening it up against the oil pump. I then got an oil pan plug gasket and installed it between the nut and the block. No more leaks! You can then use the bolt when needed to hold the oil pump in place if you are removing the oil pan. Just loosen the lock nut and snug up the bolt enough to hold the pump. Do not over tighten, I don't know if it can happen but I would be afraid of doing damage to the pump housing.

It's also where one would put the line if using an oil pressure gauge.

This is the tool to screw in there to keep the oil pump from falling out when you remove the pan. Easy to make your own!
