Wood graining by gunstock process
 

I just got my 36 woodie dash back after being wood grained by the water transfer printing process. It looks nice and cost much less than the old fashioned way. They lay the wood grain photo on top of water. Then the result is clear coated. Cost was $270 including return shipping for dash, windshield trim, and ash tray face. The place I picked was very slow and I wouldn't recommend them but the results were good. They neglected to wood grain the waterfall I sent them. I'll email and see what their excuse is.

thats the way to go, i loved the dashes i saw at a recent swap meet, but $700 and it did not include the window garnish ?.

I think it beats the hand-done ones, in both looks and price.

Here is their reply on the waterfall wood graining:

"We did not do the chrome piece because we were concerned that when blasting
the chrome off we would also being taking it off the raise areas. We could
have just base coated and printed right over the chrome but could not
guarantee it would stay. Please let us know if there questions."

I ended up with no woodgraining on the waterfall. That is OK with me but I would have preferred they do it. I wouldn't recommend this company. Perhaps there is a better one. Their clear coat over the wood graining wasn't show quality but I paid a lot less than the old fashioned way. Perhaps they aren't very experienced in car dash woodgraining. I wouldn't hesitate to use the process again as it is a good look and much cheaper.

How well did the "grains" line up between the glove box door and the rest of the dash?

You can grain the waterfall yourself. Tape off the raised areas and then use an adhesion promoter, followed by the base coat. Get some gel stain to match the grain color and apply it with an artists brush, leaving brush marks. Now go over the stain with a dry brush and an unsteady hand (comes naturally to me) and make your grain pattern. The fan type brushes seem to work better at creating a grain pattern. You can also use a dragging brush, but they are usually to big for the waterfall. They are sold where faux painting supplies are sold.
