What year is the best AOD to put behind an 8ba?

I'm not sure of years but it maybe in the 1980's or pre 90's with no electronics which is
a big can of computer worms. We did one from a 1985 Lincoln works perfectly. We
bought the throttle pressue cable set up from Lockar, which is a must have. We did a
pickup and the Lockar <spelling? works perfectly. On a car you can use the column
shift with some shift rod tweeking. I made a PR- N -D0- Low indicator works good looks
good. sam

WE have one in Georges roadster and it came from an 80's PU, I think???

Also, the electronic transmission (4R70W) is virtually the same as an AOD internally so the wide ratio planetary gears will interchange into the AOD. The W in 4R70W stands for wide ratio.

AOD were used in Ford cars starting in 1980 and running into 1991. The electrics came out for 1992. For a list, look up the Ford AOD on wikipedia. Any of them can be beefed up so I wouldn't worry about the year it came from. There are some good articles out there like this one: http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-t...-aod-aodetail/

No one makes a direct adapter for the AOD to flathead so a person would have to check into the C4 adapter and whether it will work with that. A lot of AODs were made and the small block Ford types are common. There are a lot of different adapters now for the AOD due to folks wanting to update there old Y-block and big block Ford cars & pickups.

The later the year the better, did some improvements from 88 up.

Also keep in mind an AOD is totally reliant on the throttle valve for shift pressures. It is critical that it be adjusted correctly for correct shift points and trans pressures. A misadjusted throttle valve can and will lead to premature clutch failure. The geometry of the throttle linkage associated with the throttle valve is critical.

I have an AOD on my hot rod 49 woodie with a 302 mustang engine. When I let off the gas at highway speed or 40mph the throttle stays constant. I have to put on the brakes to slow down at all. AOD just came back from the transmission shop. I'm expecting the throttle to go down when I let off the throttle. How do I fix the problem?

I purchased the adapter kit from Speedway for my AOD to 8ba motor. I removed from box, read instructions and bolted right up no issues. Pay attention to the instructions where the starter is located. Per the instructions I had to remove a touch off the block for the starter to bolt up. I removed the starter from 70's model ford 400 small block I have and switched the nose cone with the one in the kit and bolted right up.

According to Speedway, the C4 adapter is usable for AOD as well so that's good to know. Their kit w/transmission is up there in price but just the adapter is reasonable. The Monster prices are less money for AOD transmissions.

MR Texas
If running a Holley carb on a 302 Ford AOD set up, a person may need a corrector for the TV cable set up. It should let the engine go back to idle and trans shouldn't continue at that speed. You might look into something like that even if your not running a Holley carb. Something is holding it back.
