Folks,
On the 32 gas gage: I removed the small air line from the top of the dash gage. put in some more of the red fluid. over filled a little. I pumped up the gage with my finger and it held at 3/4 tank mark for 30 seconds. I then used several toothpicks to suck out enough red fluid to bring the liquid back to the zero mark. Reattached the small air line to the top of the gage. Now to see if driving makes the correction to the gas tank level which is about 1/2 full.

I forgot that I had to down load pictures first. So maybe we are back in business.
Had a chance to talk with Nate (Redpond) about his work on his 32 dump truck! He was assembling engine components tonight!

You have inspired me to use my truck too. I already sent this photo to you, but I figured everyone else might enjoy it. Those are (6) 10x10x12 eastern white pine beams. According to the scale on the lift, they all weigh about 1900 pounds. It felt good to give the old girl a workout.

Our 32 hauls a tent, some folding chairs, empty milk cans, a toolbox, and maybe a case of beer once in a while! Pretty soft on this end!

Ford folks,
Another 10 mile trip to antique Kennedy's hardware in cranesville, with friend Brent. That puts about 200 miles on the rebuilt "B" 4 cylinder flat head engine! We needed food grade buckets to extract the honey from my 4 hives. All of the bees died during the winter. Not a good time for bee keepers in our area. Cause unknown.
The gas gauge in the 32 looks about right at 1/4 tank mark.
Added some water and antifreeze solution to bring it back up to full. Seems to take about a gallon. Does that seem correct??

Sorry about your bees. They have been subject to several epidemics in recent years.


A gallon of coolant after a 10 mile trip is way too much. On the other hand, don't over fill the radiator either as it will just drain off as the engine warms up.

David, Folks,
No the drop in coolant was probably over 50 plus miles, and it seems to boil or bubble some out when ever it pulls a little hard or higher RPM. I just worry it's loosing too much when I have to put a gallon of coolant in it. Probably did this twice in 200 miles.
How do you know where the correct fill level should be?
Still learning here.
Do I need to have a better rad cap seal??

So you see the coolant loss out the top of the radiator - onto the grill? If so, then one has to ponder where it is all going.

On my V8, it will puke water when I overflow it, but once it settles down to where it should be, then no problems. I would not think you'd be putting a gallon of water twice in 200 miles.

Yes it seems most comes out of the rad cap. Some has leaked from the water pump too. I have tightened the nut on the water pump several times. I don't know. Some may also be coming out the overflow hose too. I can't see this while driving.
Just trying to understand if something may be wrong or normal?? I tend to agree this does not seem normal??

Have you used an inferred thermometer to check the temperapure of the egine and radiator after a long drive? You only need coolant to cover the tubes in the top of the radiator tank. Like David said, it will find it's own level.

One last thought. Have you had the radiator cleaned or "rodded" out throughly? This often makes all the difference in normal operating temperatures and running hot.

I did used a inferred thermometer awhile ago and I believe the temp was about 150 around/on parts of the cooling system. So I don't think its really running hot?? I dont think its boiling water out. more like a pressure build up. It did about the same with the old engine?

I cant see the top of the fins, or maybe I am not looking correctly down the neck? Seems to have a plate/ baffle right below the filler neck.

As far as the radiator condition. It is a fairly new radiator but when the old engine was leaking it did get several doses of magic stop leak potion! Which may not be the best for the radiator? No I did not have it cleaned after that.

The engine was static timed. Not much beyond that. I probably need to learn more on the timing?

The baffle belongs there and 150 degrees is normal. Fours tend not to be plagued by overheating issues, unlike some flathead V8s of the era.

David, folks,
I am so not used to these engines. Should it be burping out water? I have many other 4 cylinder engines but all overhead valve, and pressure systems. Non of those burp out water??

I took four Shoebox radiators to a shop today. First time I used this shop, very nice guy , took a lot of time to talk about what he was going to do.........and the best part......he’s got a big ‘Ol Sugar shack right in the middle of his dooryard!.......Mark

Chris, You already have several good leads on your coolant problem, if they don't solve the issue here is another idea. Is it possible that your anti freeze solution is foaming up at "higher "speeds ? I have an old Brockway truck with a big flathead six that will turn anti freeze into foam, and push it out of the radiator cap every time I get up to 50 mph. If I run straight water in the truck the problem disappears. It is easy enough to switch over to water and give it a test if all else fails. Steve

I might just try water. Yes this is foam coming out of the cap. I don't baby the truck much so it is running at a pretty good RPM sometimes. That is when the "overflow" of foam happens. Back off and it calms down.

The fins are trimmed a little. I am going to drain the coolant and flush, then run with just water, as a test.

Well it sure seems like you hit the nail on the head! Drained the coolant, flushed with water, filled with water and drove like normal for about 20 miles. not a hint of water out the cap. The level remained right at the baffle inside the top of the rad neck. Thanks to all that responded. Seemed way too simple.
The break in oil was getting a little dirty so I changed the oil today also.
While in Albion visiting John and testing on the 32, I filled it with gas and the gage came up to about 1/4 mark. At least it's not totally dead and may respond as I drive it more?
Will go for a drive with grandson Cooper if the weather is good tomorrow.
While at the gas station I was invited to a local truck show June 3rd in Conneaut Ohio.
