Found a 1930 Sport Coupe, please help me get it running better
 

Hi Barners!
I got a 30 sport coupe and I am really stoked because I always wanted one . It has been in the same family since 1965, but the last owner died 7 years ago, so it has been sitting since 05. I charged the battery and got it running, flushed the tank, cleaned everything fuelwise and checked the ignition but it still runs really rough under load. Distributor, wires, plugs, coil and everything else ignition related is and looks clean and new, and every cylinder does have a regular spark. Compression is even on all four cylinders and I cleaned the carb.Yes the carb could use a rebuild in the near future, but the float level is set and all is clean and sealed, so it should at least run better than it does right now.

As soon as the engine is under load different cylinders start to miss,max speed is like 35-40mph, it bogs and rattles like there´s no tomorrow. The battery is charged and the voltmeter shows 6.25 V, with the engine running @ idle the voltage drops to 6.02V. The car has been converted to a modern distributror and an 6V alternator. I would rather have it stock but for now I would like to use what I have...
I will attach some pics, I hope you guys have an idea what I can try next

Although it may look new, I would suspect the ignition coil is breaking down under load.

You have a B engine with what looks like a VW distributor, can't tell if you have an A or B timing gear cover.
There's no telling what advance the distributor has but that could be part of the problem.
Another problem could be the adjustment on the choke rod. Turn it in clock wise easily until it seats
then back it out one turn and see how it runs.Open or close it a little while driving to see where it runs best.

Hallo Chris,

It sounds like maybe the polarity on your coil is reversed.

Is that a G28T engine in your car?

Are the coil & plug wires the carbon filled type?If so,replace them with ones with real wire inside.Plugs look smaller than the 7/8" A & B plugs.If they are 18 mm,then it may be a Russian or German engine.Dist sure looks like a VW unit.

Issue out of reversed coil would not be as bad (i know, as i had that)
I would try an other coil and new cables first and go back to orig distributor next.
Please keep us updated

Thanks for all your help!!! you are a great bunch! I´ve seen there are quite some folks from this side of the pond on here too!

I have checked the engine numbers, the block reads AB 51088xx and the head G38T-6050 19K51 EB. The distrubutor is a Bosch, aswell as the rest of the ignition system. I tried playing around with the choke rod and backed up the choke rod fitting a couple of turns, e voila she runs way better than before, no bogging up to 45 mph, and then a bog here and there. I also found the idle mixture screw( at least that´s what I think it is) was too far out also. I hope I can start from there and make her drive as she is supposed to be. I still think the spark is a bit weak, but with the carb out of adjustment there were just too many things off.

Nice Model A! I'll be interested to hear more when you get things adjusted properly. I remember going through Landshut a few times about 10 years ago when my wife (fiancee at that time) was studying abroad in Regensburg. I had the opportunity to travel over there a couple times and see some sehenswirdikeiten. :D Hopefully I will be able to travel out there again sometime. Good luck with your project!

Haha, Landshut is still there and so is Regensburg!Whenever you come over let me know and I will show you around in the Model A : )
I spilles some gas around Landshut today. My freshly soldered carb float broke again and the carb flooded. Funny thing is, with the flooded carb the car ran like a champ!!Powerful without any misses or bogs. Maybe the biogs were caused by a lean condition by the bad or stuck float...?

I'd love that! :) The same is true if you ever travel to western washington in the U.S. Sounds like you're having fun and glad to hear you are getting more power out of the engine and have it driving.
